John Philip Couch Scholarship
For Undergraduate French Majors to study in France
The John Philip Couch Scholarship was created through a generous gift to the North Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (NC-AATF). Dr. “Phil” Couch was a longtime French professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro who passed away on March 12, 2006.
Eligibility criteria:
Undergraduate student in a NC Public or Private institution
Declared French major
Completion of at least 2 French classes beyond the intermediate level at an accredited college or university in NC
Minimum 2.75 GPA
Enrolling in a semester or year-long study abroad program in France (summer programs are not eligible) approved by the candidate's school
The study must result in academic credit in the candidate's home university
Nominated by the candidate's undergraduate institution. Each institution may nominate one student per school year.
All the above criteria must be completed before the candidate may apply.
Application deadline: March 15 of each year
Winners will be announced by April 15.

Couch Scholarship Recipients

$4000 = semester program
$7000 = year long program
Multiple scholarships may be awarded each year, depending upon the performance of the Couch Scholarship Endowment.

High School Travel Scholarship
For Committed High School French Students with Demonstrated Financial Need: Deadline April 1 of each year
The NC-AATF High School Travel Scholarship is a $1000 grant intended to help remove financial barriers from educational travel. One scholarship will be awarded annually to a dedicated high school French student with demonstrated financial need.
Eligible Students:
Have completed at least 2 levels of French study in High School.
Plan to continue studying French after this trip.
Have all A’s and B’s in French.
Are nominated by an NC-AATF member (one nominee per school per year)
Have attended a North Carolina school for at least 2 years.
Have a demonstrated financial need. (as documented by qualification for free / reduced lunch OR by an attestation of financial need from the school guidance counselor)
Is using this scholarship for a formal program - not a family trip.
Agrees to work with NC-AATF upon return to create a video or presentation for use in promoting this scholarship
