Abstract: The impact of climate change on the fishing practices, level of awareness on fishing regulations and fishery agencies among the fishermen in Nagapattinam was explored. One of two qualitative techniques—focus group discussions and
personal interviews—was used with each participant. A total number of 12 fishermen, 11 were included for FGD and 1 for in-depth interview through purposive sampling technique. Content and thematic analyses were carried out. The four major categories identified were challenges faced in fishing practices, Unsustainable fishing practices, Awareness related to management of fisheries and expectation from government. The study findings revealed the need to educate the fishermen on the proactive measures to protect the marine ecosystem and adhering to the regulations imposed by the fisheries board to protect the aquatic resources in ocean. Also, there is a need for government policies to be implemented to educate the fishermen to adopt sustainable fishing practices to promote and enhance the marine resources which will in turn promote the fishing occupation.
