With the closing of New Beginnings non-profit in September 2024, a group of 20+ volunteers agreed to lead and host this organization's Social Events and Relationship Support Meetings, published on Meetup.com. The eleven meetup groups managed by the non-profit were consolidated under a single meetup account which can hold up to three meetup groups. The two active consolidated meetup groups within the account were temporarily renamed "NB Social Events" and "NB Relationship Support." Both group's prior URL's remain the same so folks can find us the same way (www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-New-Beginnings and www.meetup.com/Divorce-Support-San-Francisco). The meetup account's subscription is paid through early February 2025, after which, the subscription will need to be renewed through donations or fees charged to participants.
In December (see slides with notes to download, left column), this new website was unveiled for NB organizers and hosts to stay up to date with the pending events calendar and to catch up if they need to miss a planning meeting.
We had a very successful Ballet event in Oakland at Temple Hill Auditorium, followed by Dinner at D. Monaghan's. Hats off to Raj for his many hours of effort coordinating 44+ attendees and their free tickets - herding cats, for sure!
Hosts are being asked to count attendees (on the Meetup app) at their events to compare RSVPs to actual participants. They are also being asked to have short conversations with newcomers, in addition to introducing themselves, and "deputize" "older" newcomers to help meet and greet. Everyone was reminded to stay alert for cross-posting opportunities with other meetup groups.
The group discussed options for collecting fees in 2025. Online payments are convenient but involve tax reporting issues. "Passing the hat" or collecting cash gifts/pledges, although less desirable, allows flexibility. A contribution of $10–15 per person to cover costs, including the Meetup subscription renewal due February 15, was suggested. A manila envelope will be passed at January and February events until we have enough for the year.
Mary, Maria and Dulce are planning a dinner event for the January "NB Night Out." Suggestions were made for Trivia Night, Bowling, Dinner for 10 in a member's home, and Line Dancing. Repeats: biweekly Saturday coffees and RTD at St. James Gate every Saturday. No plans have been made or hosts volunteered for Christmas Eve/Day or New Year's Eve. Casey & Sylvie are hosting the New Year's Day Hike with Bay Area Outings, led by Hamid. Martin will lead another Historic Architectural Walking Tour on Saturday, January 11 in Pacific Heights.
Next NB Organizers & hosts meeting is a week early on Monday, January 13, 7-9 pm, to avoid MLK Jr. holiday and Inauguration events.
In November (see slides with notes to download, above left column), we agreed to meet monthly to plan our Pending Events calendar as far ahead as possible. Each meeting, we will focus on repeat events and those occurring during the current month and month after.
We acknowledged our busiest host to date - Nancy hosted a whopping 12 events! and thanked everyone for their help hosting. We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to Raj for manually tallying our activity to date (since Sept 2), including RSVPs, Events and hosts. We have done very well and seem to be attracting more new attendees, but have yet to reach the average frequency of events managed by the non-profit. So there's still room for growth!
We successfully developing several fun events and volunteers stepped up willingly to host! After the meeting, Mary, Maria and Dulce volunteered to co-host a monthly themed "NB Night Out," starting with a White Elephant gift exchange on December 19 (4-8 pm).
Amy and Harvey have continued to lead the existing Relationship Support Meetings on the first and third Wednesday (7-9 pm PT) and Sunday (,4-6 pm PT) evenings, respectively.
Harvey's meetings on Sunday are currently not published on Meetup and are mostly to support existing, rather than new, attendees. Amy will begin hosting weekly on Wednesdays, 7-9 pm, starting on January 8, 2025.
David Eligator started a weekly Divorced Dads Walk on Sundays (10:30-11:30 am PT) at Crystal Springs Sawyer Camp Trail in San Mateo. This is designed as a relaxed support group. He's had 4-6 consistent weekly attendees so far and enough momentum to continue the group in the new year.
In our Volunteer Kick-off meeting, led by Raj and Amy, with Davis advising, we agreed to keep the Social Events momentum going by populating the Meetup calendar with regular and simple-to-manage events so that our attendees and members will stay engaged and want to continue to visit our meetup page and participate in our events. So far, that has been successful. We have had many attendees with people on waitlists often for our scheduled events.
