Are you curious about how to get back to main campus from Blakely Cemetery and want to see what the relevant trails and intersections look like? You've come to the right spot! Blue marks on the map to the right indicate locations highlighted on this page.
We begin this section of trails at the intersection of the Ichthyology Inn Junction, the Pond Trail, and the Spine Trail (aka the Spine Trail Log Circle), where the map cutout above says "YOU ARE HERE." Start by facing northeast along the Pond Trail. As you move down this page, you'll travel farther southeast around this section of the map.
Closest restrooms: Dining Hall, Friendship Circle, Pond Bathroom, Mill Workers' Cabin Bathroom.
Pond Trail
Northeast - Head down the Pond Trail! You'll be able to see the Learning Tree House across the ravine while making your way to the Pond Shelter.
Southeast - Head down the Spine Trail toward the suspension bridge.
West - You can head up the Spine Trail (signs usually point to Cattail Marsh and Charlie's Bog) or down the Junction trail to Ichthyology Inn, also known as Fish Tank.
2. Pond Shelter
The pond shelter is a great spot to go for lunch, during a night hike, to read a storybook, to shelter from the wind, and for many other activities! You will find nets, bins, and ice trays stored in the benches for macroinvertebrate investigations.
Pond Steps - The Pond Steps go down to the shore of the pond just to the southeast of the Pond Shelter. You can also stop by the Pond Bathroom just a bit farther down the trail.
3. Mac's Dam Trail
Head southwest (uphill) to connect with the Spine Trail.
Going northwest will take you to the Pond Bathroom and the Pond Shelter.
Downhill to the northeast, you'll find the floating classroom, Mac's Dam, the Pond Amphitheater. There are many great points (like this little side trail) to access the shore of the pond from along this section of trail.
4. Mac's Dam
Mac's Dam is one of my favorite spots on campus day or night. You can see so much sky, watch the ducks, listen to the echos, search for macroinvertebrates, and so much more. If you continue up Mac's Dam Trail to the northeast, it becomes the Suspension Bridge Trail when it curves sharply to the south.
5. Pond Amphitheater
The Pond Amphitheater lies below Mac's Dam to the south-southeast, close to where the water lets out into the ravine on its way to Blakely Harbor. It can be a great lunch spot. Use this map to familiarize yourself with how to find the trail to get down here.
6. Suspension Bridge Trail Intersection with Cemetery Trail
Northwest - Follow the Suspension Bridge Trail until it curves to the southwest and becomes Mac's Dam Trail.
East-northeast - The Cemetery Trail will pass the Loop Access trail, the Mill Workers' Cabin, and the Old Logging Road on the way to Blakely Cemetery.
South - Follow the trail south and it will eventually make a u-turn to take you to the suspension bridge and canopy tower.
This photo is a bit wonky, but despite having two navigation signs, it shows the trails in the right places. There is also some wonky trail navigation on this part of the map on the way to the east side of the suspension bridge. Sorry about that!
7. Cemetery Trail Intersection with Loop Access Trail
The Loop Access trail very clearly looks like an offshoot from the Cemetery Trail. You'll be able to tell you've reached the Cemetery Trail if you're coming up from the Lower Loop Trail, and you'll be able to tell which trail to stay on if you're coming from and staying on the Cemetery Trail.
You can also check out where the Loop Access meets Lower Loop Trail and explore the Lower Loop Trail more on the Spine Trail Log Circle to Harbor Shelter page.
8. Cemetery Trail Intersection with a Service Road and a Private Residence
If you are heading back to Main Campus from Blakely Cemetery, you will probably pass this intersection. Do not head down the trail marked "Private Residence" or the service road to the north-northwest. The Cemetery Trail heads either west (to Main Campus) or south (to the Mill Workers' Cabin) from this intersection.
There is also a little cutoff trail you can use to get to and from the Mill Workers' Cabin more quickly. It bypasses this intersection altogether.
9. Mill Workers' Cabin
Check out the Mill Workers' Cabin! Just be sure to take off your shoes (there are slippers inside you can use). Also, note the bathroom across the trail.
South - Step over a small log to head down the Old Logging Road.
Southeast - Go down the trail to the left of the bathroom to head to Blakely Cemetery.
North - Follow the Cemetery Trail away from the cemetery.
Northwest - Find the cabin cutoff trail to the right of the Mill Workers' Cabin.
Check out where the Old Logging Road meets Lower Loop Trail and explore the Lower Loop Trail more on the Spine Trail Log Circle to Harbor Shelter page.
10. Port Blakely Cemetery
The entrance to the Cemetery Trail can be hard to find from the cemetery. It's along the west side of the lot, not along any of the cemetery roads or trails. It looks like an unmaintained footpath.
Here's a link to what it looks like when you are actually entering campus a few feet into the woods along the trail. There are a couple of logs to step over, which keeps out bikers and other wanderers.
