Welcome back to my Site Journal. Since the introduction of the Site Journal assignments, I've wanted to complete an entry at night. This week's entry did just that.
At around 7 PM, I threw on my tennis shoes and decided to go for a run to Observatory Park. A few weeks ago, the electric scooter my friends and I bought ended up breaking which has been quite detrimental on my day-to-day conveniences. Despite not using the scooter, I still enjoyed my run to the park with Lia. While we passed a few people on our way, when we reached the park, we were met with silence.
Unlike every other time I have been to the park (whether it was for the Site Journal or not), I was met with the absence of human presence. I could feel the cool breathe of the wind against my cheeks and hear various insects creaking in the grass and trees. Another large change the night brought was the removal of color. The vibrant colors of the park have always been something that has stood out. This time however, especially with the removal of the fall colors, I could only see the outlines of the trees and their leaves as I looked upward. Aside from the light of the houses surrounding the park, the only light came from the main Observatory building which illuminated the entrance quite warmly. (also note that the photos show more color than the naked eye. It was much darker out in person)
A few other places I checked out were the tennis courts, the field, and the back of the Observatory. It was interesting to see no one using the tennis courts as they always have people playing pickleball or tennis on them during the day. (I also just won a pickleball tournament on these courts on Friday which was very fun) Next, I followed a source of light to the back of the Observatory where I was met with the same warm glow of the light bouncing off the reddish bricks. Lastly, I laid in the middle of the field and watched the stars. While they definitely were not as good as the ones at the Mountain Campus, I still enjoyed the relaxing moment.
As I was getting ready to leave the park, I realized how only one tree had lost all of its leaves. After bringing this up to Lia, I found out that she actually talked about this in her last Site Journal. According to her, this happens to trees because of stress. Whether it be from disease, bugs, or a change in temperature, this signals that the tree might be on its last few years.
Coming to Observatory Park at night was a lot of fun. It was definitely a switch up from the normal visit. When you remove one of the core senses, you heighten the others which was very apparent for me as I lay in the field and took it all in. I am very excited to see the full fall colors in my next Site Journal entry.
