Air pollution is the presence of harmful foreign contaminants in the atmosphere.
India is one of the worlds most polluted countries. In fact, 21 out of 30 of the worlds most polluted cities are situated in India.
At least 140 million people in India breathe air that is 10 times or more over the WHO safe limit.
Air pollution contributes to the premature deaths of 2 million Indians every year.
Exposure to particulate matter for a long time can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases
Over two million children—half the children in Delhi—have abnormalities in their lung function, according to the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute.
Research shows that children are prone to having more rapid breathing that adults. Due to smaller and developing lungs and airways, pollution affects them more.
This is dangerous especially in places such as India where, first, pollution levels are high, and many kids are exposed to pollution due to lack of resources.
Weak immune system
88% premature deaths occurred in low- and middle income countries, with the largest number in the WHO
Air pollution is due for about 80% to ischaemic heart disease, strokes, 14% chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or acute lower respiratory infections, and for 6% to lung cancer
most likely suffer from chronic diseases, co-existing chronic lung, heart or circulatory conditions worsen exposure to environmental pollutants
Sources
Our idea to reduce air pollution, and thus the health problems caused by it, is bio curtains.
These curtains purify passing air, and function due to micro algae present in air pockets. The curtains are made using sustainable bio plastic. Contaminated air enters through the bottom, and as it goes up, the photosynthetic properties of algae extract carbon and replace it with oxygen.
