Fossil Beach

Fossil Beach - HoBqs (HOBUX)

HoBqs was a permanent village located north and across the bay from Coupeville. Smaller in size the village boasted a few houses and a single smokehouse believed to be owned by Squiqui in the 19th century, and his son Billy Barlow lived there as well. The village was represented by Goliah during the 1855 Point Elliott treaty negotiations.

Fossil Beach, much like Monroe's Landing, was popular for harvesting horse clams and was one of the principal resources the area was known for. Penn Cove was widely recognized as a fishing area of great importance to the resident tribal communities prior to their relocation to reservations.

There were a number of hunting areas on the prairies and within the surrounding villages of Penn Cove. Resources gathered from this area included deer, waterfowl, blackberries, wild currants, flax for medicinal purposes, and strawberries.
