PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The Thakur Sahebs of this thikana, are descendants of Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar (founder of Udaipur) through his third son Baba Veeramdeo, the younger brother of Rana Sagat Singh (founder of the Shaktawat-Sisodia clan). This thikana is a Baba Ranawat thikana (that is, a thikana from which male children were adopted to the ruling house of Mewar, in the absence of a male heir). The descendents of Maharana Udai Singh II were the first branch of Sisodias to carry the patronym of Ranawat. Other Veeramdevot Ranawats are found in Gosunda, Khairabad, Hamirgarh, Kankarwa, Jaiwana, Turkiya, Pahuna, Ranawaton-ki-sadri and Ranawaton-ka bangla. Maharaj Shri SANGRAM SINGHJI, 1st Baba Saheb of Sanwar 1705/1720, he fought on the side of Maharana Sangram Singh II of Mewar (1710/1734), together defeating the Mughal Ranbai Khan in the Battle of Badanwada in 1711 and who was sent by the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah I; he built a fort and palaces at Sanwar, married 1stly, Chauhanji Joma Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Vijay Singh, married 2ndly, Mertaniji Shringar Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Jujhar Singh, married 3rdly, Jhaliji Bal Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Jet Singh, married 4thly, Mertanij Kalyan Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Sanwaldas, and had issue, six sons and three daughters.

Maharaj Shri FATEH SINGHJI, 2nd Baba Saheb of Sanwar 1720/1742, during his tenure, the revenue of the thikana increased to Rs 3,00,000, but due to internecine rivalry with his brother Bharat Singh of Kherabad, the thikana lost several villages, which were made khalsa; he adopted his younger brother, Thakur Shambhu Singh of Ched Amli (see above); married six times (including), 1stly, Chauhanji Dev Kanwar, she committed sati at Dabar, and had adoptive issue. Maharaj Shri SHAMBHU SINGHJI, 3rd Baba Saheb of Sanwar 1742/1773; son of Maharaj Shri Sangram Singh, 4th Baba Saheb of Kherabad, he was granted the thikana comprising 35 villages and a revenue of Rs 43,000; he fought with the forces of Maharana Raj Singhji II of Mewar in 1748, against the combined forces of Maharaja Ishwari Singh of Jaipur and Maharaja Surajmal of Bharatpur to champion the rights of his nephew, Maharaja Madho Singhji I, for the gaddi of Jaipur, the combined forces of Mewar and Malhar Rao Holkar were able to force the Jaipur forces to a truce; he also fought for Maharana Ari Singhji II in 1769, against the military of Mahadhji Scindia and the pretender to the Mewar gaddi, Ratan Singh (son of Gogunda Jhali Rani, wife of Maharana Raj Singhji II), defeating them, he then accompanied Maharana Ari Singhji II in order to quell the revolt by Rawal Raghodev of Devgarh and Maharaj Mokham Singhji of Bhindar, he, along with Maharaj Daulat Singh Veeramdevot of Bavlas and his younger brother Thakur Anop Singhji Veeramdevot, were present at Amargarh when Maharana Ari Singhji II was treacherously assassinated by Rao Raja Ajit Singhji of Bundi in 1773, Maharaj Shambu Singhji and Daulat Singhji were killed defending their feudal lord, as was Rao Raja Ajit Singhji, whilst Anop Singhji was wounded in the skirmish; married 1stly, Narukiji Rani Ratan Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Sawai Singhji, married 2ndly, Chauhanji Rani Raj Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Sobhag Singhji, married 3rdly, Panwarji Rani Maya Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Padam Singhji, married 4thly, Kachchawiji Rani Maya Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Durjan Singhji Khangarot, and had issue, the Thakur Sahebs of Sanwar and Kankarwa. He was killed in battle against the forces of Bundi in 1773 fighting for his sovereign, the Maharana of Udaipur.

Maharaj Shri DAULAT SINGHJI, 5th Baba Saheb of Sanwar -/1791, he fought for Maharana Bhim Singhji of Mewar and his forces against Nana Sadashivrao, capturing Nimbahera, Jeeran and Jawad, and took part along with his brothers in the Battle of Harkyakhal (between Neemuch and Mandsaur) on 26th January 1788, where the Mewar forces were defeated by the Holkars and Daulat Singhji himself was captured and imprisoned for two years; married 1stly, Jodhaniji Jas Kanwar, daughter of Bhagwat Singh Rathore, married 2ndly, Chauhanji Meena Kanwar, daughter of Zorawar Singh Purbia, married 3rdly, Jhaliji Chandan Kanwar, daughter of Rodh Singhji, and had issue. He died 1791.

Kunwar Bhawani Singhji, he was granted the Kiledari of Kumbhalgarh and received the jagir of Peepaliya near Kumbhalgarh.

Maharaj Shri BHAIRON SINGHJI I, 6th Baba Saheb of Sanwar 1791/1850s, he met Lord William Bentinck at Ajmer in 1832, accompanying Maharana Jawan Singhji, married 1stly, Chauhanji Daulat Kanwar, daughter of Devi Singhji Purbia, married 2ndly, Jhaliji Bakht Kanwar, daughter of Zalim Singhji, and had issue. He died at Vrindavan.

Maharaj Shri GIRDHARI SINGHJI, 7th Baba Saheb of Sanwar [1850s] - [8.8.1866], he was part of a force sent by Maharana Swaroop Singhji of Mewar to Neemuch during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 to rescue the British garrison stationed there; married 1stly, Mertianiji Rani Abhay Kanwar, she committed sati on his death, daughter of Thakur Veeramdev of Nimbahera, married 2ndly, Chauhanji Rani Gulab Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Sardar Singhji of Kucholi, and had adoptive issue, having adopted his younger brother. He died sp on 8th August 1866.

Maharaj Shri NAHAR SINGHJI, 9th Baba Saheb of Sanwar 1872/1925, educated at Mayo College, he repaired the fort and palaces at Sanwar and constructed the Naharsagar lake; married, a daughter of Thakur Amar Singji Rathore of Nimbahera, and had issue, six daughters.
