Maharaja of Kaski and Lamjung
Maharaja Sri Tin Sir Jung Bahadur Rana G.C.S.I., G.C.B., Prime Minister of Nepal 1846/1856 and 1857/1877, 1st Maharaja of Kaski and Lambjung 1856/1877; born 18th June 1817 as Bir Nar Singh Kunwar, on the 18th of May 1845, he killed his uncle, the Prime Minister, and immediately, with the help of the Rani, took a prominent part in the government. After a short but turbulent interval of intrigue, he got rid of his enemies at one fell swoop, by what is known as the Kot massacre, on the 15th of September 1846. From that time till the day of his death Jung Bahadur was in reality the ruler of Nepal. His old friend, the Rani, was banished, and all posts of any consequence in the state were filled by Jung, his brothers and other relatives. In 1850, finding himself securely seated in power, Jung Bahadur paid a visit to England, which made a great impression on his acute intellect, and ever after he professed and proved himself to be a staunch friend of the British. On his return in 1851 he at once devoted himself to reforming the administration of the country, in June 1857 news of the mutiny of the native troops in India reached Nepal, and produced much excitement, however, in spite of great opposition, he stood firm as an ally of the British. On the 26th June, 4000 troops were sent off to assist, and these rendered good service in the campaign against the mutineers, for which he was well rewarded, on the 6th August 1856, King Surendra Bir Bikram Shah conferred on Jung Bahadur the title of Maharaja of Kaski and Lamjung as a Hereditary distinction. The king gave him the power of life and death, making war and peace, a full control over all the state departments and to have succession of prime ministership with the title of Maharaja, bestowed upon his family in perpetuity. Later, on 28th June 1857, he received all the judicial, executive and legislative powers. Jung Bahadur made his brother, Bam Bahadur, the Prime Minister and wanted to retire from active life. But Bam Bahadur died soon after, so again he continued to be the Prime Minister; G.C.S.I. [cr.1873], G.C.B. [cr.1859], by the Emperor of China, he was awarded the title of Thwang Ling Pimma Ko Ko Kong Wang Syang on 19th April 1872, he married many wives, including 1stly, in or about January 1839, the Jetha Maharani (name unknown), died 1847, a daughter of Shri Prasad Singh Basnyat, married 2ndly, 1841, the Jetha Maharani Nanda Kumari Devi, died 1850, a sister of Shri Sanak Singh Sripali Tandon, married 3rdly, 1850, the Ganga Maharani (Kumari Gamgamma), died sp after August 1854, daughter of Raja Chikka Vira Rajendra II Udaiyar, Raja of Coorg, married 4thly, 1853, Bada Maharani Hiranyagarva Kumari Devi, she committed sati on 26th February 1877, sister of Chautarya Fateh Jung Shah (see Gorkha), she had issue, four daughters, married 5thly, 1855, the Mahila Maharani Bishnu Kumari Devi, died soon after December 1857, married 6thly, 1855, Maharani Siddhi Gajendra Lakshmi, she committed sati on 26th February 1877, daughter of Prasad Singh Basnyat, she was raised to the rank of the Antaree Maharani in 1856, married 7thly, 1855, the Ramri Maharani, she committed sati on 26th February 1877, niece of the Bada Maharani and daughter of Rana Sher Shah (see Gorkha), married 8thly, the Misri Maharani, married 9thly, Mina Rani [the Dakhchoke Rani], and had issue, 14 sons (2 died vp).
