The photos, below, document the current state of the yard, six years after the process of converting the 5,100 square feet of my property that supports the growth of plants (i.e., the area with soil) from the state in which it was found (see the species page for details), to today—2023. These photos are arranged in the following groups, in this order: current (2022-23), during (2018-22), and at the beginning (fall 2017).

Original state of front yard. Ground cover is mostly invasive, non-native wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei).

Path to backyard shed that has just been removed. First thing planted—redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) at mid far right.

During — 2019

These plants have all germinated from native seed that was cold stratified in the fridge and then direct sown in early spring.

Barriers on either side of front yard installed to stop neighbor's plants from growing into the yard.

Mid-summer after native seeds have germinated. It's a bit chaotic.

Early dominant species is Agastache nepetoides, which surprisingly bloomed in its first year.

First plants (mostly native--not the Tithonia) going in at the side of driveway.

During — 2020

In March of 2020, I started converting all of the back yard to natives.

Pond plants are filling in better in their second year. Hybrid water lily did not make it more than a couple of years as it was shaded out.

Some more interesting and unusual natives start germinating in the 2nd year like this Virginia waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum).

Lots of Salvia lyrata germinate in the 2nd growing season from seed planted in spring.
