Diverse Expressions - Reimagining / Refreshing / Revitalizing Evangelizing in 2024

With Rai Jackson

How do we reach more people is the question that every spiritual body wrestles with. How do we begin to think about evangelism from our context? Who do we start with? Where do we go?  Since the days of Jesus and the disciples the goal has always been to spread gospel to as many people and places as possible. This workshop, led by Pastors Rai Jackson and Tae Flemming of The Well in The DC / MD area, who are both pioneers in the Fresh Expressions arena, will walk with you through some very clear and basic key steps to reimagining, refreshing and revitalizing your ministry for today.

Planting Younger, Diverse and Inclusive Expressions

With Kris Sledge

In a moment where younger Americans are disengaging from organized religions and our traditional churches are aging at an alarming rate, we will explore how to embody and lead a fresh community of church that is intentionally young, diverse, inclusive, and compelling. Kris Sledge is the lead pastor of The Journey Church, an almost 5-year-old United Methodist Church in urban Harrisburg, PA. The Journey celebrates both its ability to connect with young adults (approximately 65% of the church is under the age of 40) and its diversity (55% identify as white, and 45% identify as a person of color). This community seeks to embody an inclusive, life-giving, and multi-ethnic church where we seek to help people find belonging, experience the liberative spirit of Jesus, seek justice, and love our neighbors.

Navigating FX Adventurers Through The UM Jungle

With Rob Hutchinson

The United Methodist System wasn't built with Fresh Expressions in mind! Yet, the UM Connectional structure can still be a powerful "Collaborator of Peace." Whether you are a practitioner, denominational influencer, and/or a collaborative existing church, we all need a little help steering an FX through the existing UM Connectional Institution. This workshop will equip participants with a broader understanding of the dynamics that happen during the inevitable collisions (Holy or Not) that occur as we keep trying to fit FX into UM. As we develop a Blended Ecology Jungle, what are some helpful strategies? What do we need to consider from the different points of view of the key players in the UM structure? What are some examples of Conference-sponsored FX experiments? What are we learning? What do we still need to figure out?
