Waking up at 4 in the morning is never easy, especially when you don't go to sleep early. But this morning was different, this time it was easy to pull myself out of bed. It was September 21st, three friends and I decided we wanted to climb/hike the tallest mountain in Colorado. As it is a two hour drive away and takes over 7 hours to complete the whole hike, we had to get up early to make it to the trailhead at a decent time. As we started our journey it was about 40 degrees outside so we had our jackets on and hoods up. About an hour into the hike I stopped and took the picture underneath.
As we walked through the trees, it got hot so we had to take off a couple of layers. The sky was cloud covered most of the day as you can see from the pictures. You can also see the changing colors of all the leaves, signifying fall is here and winter is near. You can even see some snow in this picture.
Hiking with friends made the experience so much fun and easier because I had motivation from my friends to keep going. Even though our legs felt like they were about to fall off, we all had the common goal of making it to the top.
After 4 and a half hours of hiking, 6 miles, and 4500ft of elevation gain, we made it to the top. 14,432 is the elevation at the top of Mt. Elbert, the highest point in Colorado and second highest in the United States. After hiking all that way we all felt very accomplished and proud of ourselves for never giving up. Never did we complain or even think about turning around, we just kept chugging along. Although we had made it to the top, we still had a long ways down the steep terrain. In my mind, the way down felt easier, but definitely hurt more. After hiking the way up, our legs were toasted and due to how steep the terrain was, our knees on the way down did the heavy lifting.
