I have always loved physical activity, fitness, and health related activities. I was initially inspired by my neighbor that is a trainer to go to school to become a trainer. Soon after I decided I wanted to go a similar but different route, physical therapy. I wanted to be able to teach and assist people relating to their bodies and fitness. I later realized I wanted more of a chance to teach and inspire rather than just heal, which led me to pursue health and physical education.
Health and physical activity is very important to me and a very important aspect of my life. I firmly believe health and physical education are two of the most important subjects because it can teach students lifelong health and fitness skills and help them find the value and joys of being physically active. Teaching kids to be active and most importantly how to have fun while being active from a young age is incredibly important and puts them on the right track in life. Physical activity is also incredibly important from a school perspective because it gives students another opportunity to let their energy out which will help students perform better in the classroom and be able to sit still and focus more effectively.
I believe teaching and assisting others is not only one of the most important and beneficial things we can do with our lives but is also incredibly fulfilling. We have an opportunity to direct and influence the trajectory’s of kids live in many ways from a very early age. If we can effectively teach students
The attributes I have to be an effective physical educator are a passion for physical activity and fitness, the drive to teach, assist, and positively influence others, and the ability to be empathetic and really listen to others to be a reliable person to come to and someone who can truly help whether its physical activity related or not.
The area I anticipate being a challenge for me is not always remembering to be vocal and put on a “teacher voice.” I have no issue speaking up, especially in a leadership role, but I am a somewhat soft-spoken person so I will have to be conscious about using a “teacher voice” at times. This is especially important in elementary school because kids tend to get rowdy and distracted so it is important to be assertive and keep them engaged at all times.
I want to be the teacher that kids can come to about anything, the teacher that all the students love and look forward to coming to his class everyday, not just because it is PE, but because I am making an impact and they're having fun learning and being active. I want to make a difference with as many students as possible, especially those that are disengaged, and try to help them enjoy being active and maybe learn something about themselves. I really want to make a point to get through to these students and show them how being healthy and active can help them, but even more importantly to help them and give them a safe space where everyone can succeed.
