This project consisted of a self-survey on phone and PC usage. The survey questions guide the answerer into thinking about their difference in usage between PC and phone, and how dependent they are on them.
(some questions edited for aesthetic)
Make and model:
Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G
OS:
Android 11
Security features:
Biometric ID (fingerprint and face ID) and PIN protected.
Is your phone connected to the cloud? Why or why not?
Yes, but I ran out of storage and do not use the cloud. I have an SSD that I trust more.
Storage space (available and used):
128 GB (no SSD); 115 GB in use.
Do you normally connect to WiFi on your phone? Why or Why Not?
Yes; I don’t have an unlimited data plan.
Where is your phone right now?
On my desk, next to me.
What do you if your phone is not in the same room as you?
Look for it, usually.
Do you take the phone into the bathroom with you? Why or why not?
Yes… I can keep scrolling or reading .
Are you able to put your phone away for an hour or more and concentrate on something else? Can you give an example of when you have done this recently?
Yes, but it’s usually to watch TV, play video games, read, sleep, or listen in class.
Most used phone apps:
Camera, various casual play apps (I cycle through quite a few), reading apps (Kindle, Webtoon), Instagram, various online shopping apps, and Google software.
Apps/software used regularly (PC):
Chrome and Word.
Are there tasks or activities you find you must do on the computer instead of your phone? Or vice versa?
I prefer to watch TV and videos on my laptop; I also need my computer to most efficiently access online courses. Some websites will only display complete information if I’m using a laptop vs my phone, as well. I prefer to read on my phone, play music, and play games on it, though.
If phones disappeared today, how do you think your computer usage would change?
I’d probably use my computer considerably more than I do now.
If you didn’t have access to your phone, how would you navigate to a strange place?
I’d have to write down the directions in advance and keep them with me. If I had a GPS device, I would also use that. Depending on how far away and prominent the location was, road signs would also be a big help.
OS of PC using now:
Windows 10 Enterprise, 64-bit.
Hard drive space (PC):
931 Gb
How does this computer connect to the internet?
Via Ethernet cable.
Run a speed test.¹
310.62 Mbps download, 888.04 Mbps upload, 4 ping Ms
Lessons learned: I learned that I use both my phone and PC for research and leisure, but in mostly opposite ways. While I prefer to use my phone for simple Google searches, I prefer to use my PC for deep dives that require a bit more research. And while I type out poems, thoughts, and to-do lists on my phone, I prefer to type longer pieces, even as short as half a page, on a PC. I also realized I am attached at the hip to my phone (but who isn't?), which is slightly concerning since most of my info and data comes from it. I also learned how much storage space my phone has (answer: a lot), and how fast the CCBC internet is (very!).
