📍 Location & Terrain
Nashik is situated in the northwestern part of Maharashtra, about 170 km from Mumbai and 210 km from Pune.
It lies on the Deccan Plateau, and much of its land is formed from basaltic lava rock due to ancient volcanic activity, typical of the Western Ghats.
The region has a mix of plains, hills, and valleys, with parts of it covered by forests and greenery, especially during the monsoon.
🌊 River System
The Godavari River, India’s second-longest river, originates from Trimbakeshwar (just outside Nashik) and flows eastward through the city.
Several small tributaries and dams like Gangapur Dam and Darna Dam support agriculture and provide drinking water to the region.
🌾 Climate & Soil
Nashik has a tropical wet and dry climate—hot summers, refreshing monsoons, and mild winters.
The black cotton soil (regur) is highly fertile, ideal for crops like grapes, onions, sugarcane, and pomegranates. This is why Nashik has become a hub for both agriculture and viticulture (wine-making).
