NANOSCALE PHOTOVOLTAIC RESEARCH GROUP

Our group (PI: Dr Jae Sung Yun) established a unique setup to examine nanoscale optoelectronic properties of defects in semiconductors using scanning probe microscopy (SPM). In general, an SPM image is constructed by moving a sharp probe across a sample surface while using a feedback mechanism to maintain the tip−sample separation. As the probe is scanned along the surface, electronic, topographical, force, optical, and piezoresponse properties are mapped out at resolutions that range from the atomic scale up to tens of nanometres.

In order to reveal charge carrier transport properties, we utilise an external light source for Kelvin probe force microscopy, conductive AFM, piezoresponse force microscopy, Nano-IR microscopy, and electrostatic force microscopy.

Our group is particularly interested in elucidating the roles of nanoscale defects such as grain boundaries, twin or ferroic domains, and dislocations in emerging compound semiconductors for optoelectronic applications.

We investigate all kinds of energy harvesting materials, specifically but not limited to photovoltaic materials such as organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites, chalcogenides, kesterites, silicon, GaAs, etc. We are open to multidisciplinary collaboration opportunities!
