レア度：いつでも見られる
形態：全長5㎝程度のイガイ類。貝殻は台形。青紫色の固い殻皮に覆われているが、それ以外の部位は青い地色が露出しており、茄子漬けに似ている。
生息域：地中海原産で、外来種として南アフリカ、東アジア、北アメリカ西岸、オーストラリア南東部を含む世界中の温帯域に分布する (Branch & Steffani 2004)。日本への定着は、1930年代以降と考えられている (岩崎ら 2004)。現在は日本全国に分布し、潮間帯から水深10mの岩礁に生息する。七重浜ではムラサキインコと並ぶ超普通種で、大規模なベッドが見られる。近隣の葛登支には生息していない。
生態：ヒトデ類、カニ類 (e.g. Chen et al. 2004)、肉食性巻貝 (e.g. Fujinaga & Nakao 1999; Kawai 2002) などあらゆる捕食者の餌生物となる。とはいえただ食われるだけではなく、捕食者刺激の存在下では殻を厚くするという可塑的な反応を示すこともできる (Smith & Jennings 2000)。日本列島沿岸における本種の繁殖期は原産地周辺と同じ年1回で (Hrs-Brenko 1971)、地域によって長さに若干の差がみられるものの10–4月の範囲にある (劉・梶原 1983)。一方、南アフリカでは年2回繁殖する個体群もみられる (van Erkom Schurink & Griffiths 1991)。本種は体外受精および間接発生をおこない、海中を漂う期間は約3か月と推定されている (梶原ら 1978)。この特性は、バラスト水への混入などによる世界規模の本種の分布拡大にも密接に関わっている (Geller et al. 1994)。
その他：北海道では、在来種のキタノムラサキイガイ M. trossulus との間に交雑が生じている (Brannock et al. 2009; Iwasaki 2019)。
