81. Choi and Kwak from Nam lab (Jeonbuk National University’s Department of Organic Materials and Fiber Engineering) Awarded the Prestigious 2025 Presidential Science Scholarship.
On June 5, Chonbuk National University announced that Kwak Young-woo (Integrated Master’s and Ph.D. program) and Choi Young-min (Master’s program), both from the Department of Organic Materials and Fiber Engineering in the College of Engineering, have been selected as final recipients of the 2025 Presidential Science Scholarship for Graduate Students. These two promising scholars, who have developed their research under the guidance of Professor Nam Chang-woo, achieved this distinction amid intense national competition among graduate students in science and engineering—a testament to their dedication and excellence.
The Presidential Science Scholarship is a national scholarship program jointly operated by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Student Aid Foundation. Aimed at nurturing top-tier talent in science and technology, the program selects and supports outstanding graduate students in the STEM fields. This year, approximately 120 new recipients were chosen—50 in master's programs and 70 in doctoral programs. Selected students receive monthly scholarships of up to KRW 1.5 million (approx. USD 1,100) for a maximum of four semesters in master’s programs, and KRW 2 million (approx. USD 1,500) per month for up to eight semesters in doctoral programs. Notably, recipients can receive this scholarship alongside other government or private funding, making it a substantial support for active research efforts.
That two students from the same lab were selected at the same time is a rare achievement, drawing attention both within and beyond the university as a result of the lab’s strong academic leadership and the exceptional capabilities of its members.
Kwak Young-woo remarked, “I was able to achieve this thanks to Professor Nam’s devoted guidance since my undergraduate days and the support of my lab seniors and juniors. I hope to contribute meaningful research in the development of sustainable materials.”
Choi Young-min shared similar sentiments: “My research, which began during my undergraduate years, is now showing tangible outcomes. Receiving the Presidential Scholarship following last year’s National Research Foundation scholarship feels deeply meaningful. The continued interest and guidance from my professor has been a tremendous driving force.”
Meanwhile, Kang Jin-hyuk, another student in the Integrated Master’s and Ph.D. program from the same lab, was among the 180 students selected for the first-round interviews, further reaffirming the lab’s overall research excellence.
Professor Nam Chang-woo stated, “This achievement demonstrates the immense potential of the organic materials and fiber engineering field in sustainable and advanced material research. We will continue striving to produce world-class research outcomes.”
