Presentation Description: Over the years, academic libraries have evolved, and now users can expect to find a plethora of resources for use. At Vanderbilt University’s Sarah S. Stevenson Science & Engineering Library, the staff developed a tech lending program. The program started with laptops, graphing calculators, noise canceling headphones and a few other items and has grown into a much larger program offering an array of items from Canon XC15 camera kits to virtual reality gear, to lighting kits and let’s not forget “Mortimer” our full-sized skeleton. One of the reasons that the program is emerging so quickly is due to inheriting equipment from a program at Vanderbilt that was being dissolved. This was a sudden and unexpected inheritance and though we were happy to receive the cool equipment, it came with immediate decisions, and a learning curve on how to make this program a success. As the manager of the program, I would like to share reflections about the processes that had to be taken to get the program up and running. Granted there is still learning and tweaking of things but in just one semester it feels like the program has made strides in becoming a coveted service for our patrons.

Kindness and empathy might not be the first thing to spring to mind when you think about work. However, research has proven over and over again that leadership styles that cultivate kindness, empathy, compassion and cultivate talent outperform than “average” organizations every single time.
So, what does kindness, empathy and compassion manifest within the workplace? How can we change out mindset from scarcity, intense competition and backbiting to an organization that serves as a model nationwide? This presentation will show what
“average” organizations look like and how you can transform using 4 strategies over a long period of the time. One of more of these strategies could revitalize your DEI initiatives, long term strategic planning and ultimately obtain more positive visibility for your organization.

Presentation Description: Our library has a unique structure, which requires members from the Music Library, Access Services, and University Archives and Special Collections - three seemingly disparate units with offices spread out throughout the library - to act as a “First Floor Team” to serve our patrons and guests. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our library joined many others across the country in a transition to working from home, which meant that our already spread out team was now fractured and scattered all over Nashville. Rather than give up on team-building, we took the opportunity to try to develop ourselves into a model team for the library. This presentation will discuss how we used technology and good old-fashioned books to develop overarching goals, strengthen our team, and increase communication, all from the comfort of our homes.
