We are a group of 43 ladies from all walks of life in Nakuru; a few years ago we were less than twenty so we feel optimistic with our new young members and hope to increase our funding for women and children in Nakuru.
Joining the Nakuru Branch guidance letter:-
East African Women's League is a national charitable organisation that is now over 100 years old with branches in and around Nairobi, the coast and up-country - Nanyuki, Nandi Hills, Gilgil and Nakuru; Machakos and Ulu as well. The League's principle is to help women and children in Kenya improve their livelihoods and help where we can.
At the Branch AGM members elect office bearers to form a committee to run the branch - a chairman, secretary, treasurer, councillor and a representative for the homecrafts to liaise with the EAWL Headquarters Executive Committee/National Chairman. Any member interested in taking part in running their branch is welcome on the committee. Committees meet monthly and organise general meetings for the month.
At EAWL HQ in Weal House, Bishop's Road, Nairobi, Executive hold three councils each year to which all EAWL members are invited. The first council meeting is held in March hosting the National AGM; the second council meeting is always held by an up-country branch at the end of June and third council is a week long gathering incorporating the Festival of Arts and Crafts (FOAC), the Christmas Fair and Raffle in late November. Each branch has leeway to run branches to suit their members and charities best but must be mindful of and observe the main guidance rules set out in the EAWL formal constitution.
NAKURU BRANCH meets once a month, usually on the third Tuesday for coffee followed by lunch either at a member's home or a venue of interest. Occasionally a speaker is invited or the host shares something about their interests/talents.
COMMUNICATION - an official WhatsApp group shares details of the planned meeting once decided by the current chairman. Nakuru also has a 'Chat' WhatsApp group for sharing messages of interest and birthday greetings etc.
COFFEE AND LUNCH - each member will pay KSHS400/- into the Branch cash box or paybill. Guests are welcomed but the invitor will pay for their lunch at KSHS500/-. These funds are for donating to our charities, so it is also encouraged that each member will bring a 'plate' of savoury or sweet food to contribute to our communal lunch. In this way, no one has the burden of cooking for everyone and we all get to enjoy new flavours from our mixed culture's cuisine. Our lunches are delicious!
INTENTION - our express intention when we get together is to enjoy each other's company, have fun, learn and share our diverse interests but also take care of each other, especially the older members and anyone new to Nakuru, whilst raising some money for our charities which the committee members disburse from time to time in either food, kind or money donations for critical items or sponsor outreaches.
REGISTRATION - all members must sign in the branch register at each monthly meeting and record the names of their guests. The chairman will briefly update the members on current Nakuru EAWL branch affairs and activities. All guests should be welcomed and introduced. Anyone who would like to join our branch should come to three general meetings and thereafter sign the membership application form which is sent to Executive on the recommendation of the branch committee. Having been accepted the joining fee will be the same as the annual membership fee of KSHS3,500 (in 2025). KSHS3,000 will be sent to Executive to help with the running costs of our charitable organisation and KSHS500 will be retained by the branch for disbursement to charities.
FURTHER FUND RAISERS - Nakuru branch hold a mini raffle each meeting. The prizes worth less than 500/- are donated by willing members and tickets are sold at KSHS20/- each. The raffle is drawn at lunch time.
10% SALES - anyone can bring homegrown, home crafted goods or anything of saleable quality to sell and 10% of the sales of the day is paid to the banch treasurer to help fund our charities.
FESTIVAL OF ARTS & CRAFTS - this is a well know event put on by the EAWL HQ at Weal House, Nairobi in late November. All branches compete for the Leader Board by contributing up to fifty pieces of their members creative items. These are judged and awarded commendations and prizes. The group theme submission encourages our members to join together and get creative ... its another good reason to meet for coffee.
Occasionally we hold a bigger fundraiser in the form of a sponsored walk, raffle or craft fair when there is a need to booster our branch bank account. An invitation is sent out to the wider community to join in or bring and buy and all members come on board to help.

Have you heard of Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW)? Well, EAWL does it's part in supporting this initiative by contributing towards their cause. Every year, on the 29th or April, there is the "Women Walk the World" worldwide event organised by ACWW. This year we wanted to walk in Bahati forest, where we donated trees towards reforestation. The weather had other plans and the roads became impassable. We still had our meeting and will send our contributions towards this great cause - "Rural Women in Action".
Meanwhile some of our energetic ladies took to the fields and golf course to do their bit! It was no walk in the park...
During our meeting on 21st October, 2025, Mina, one of our members who also runs Operation Chupi, kindly donated underpants and diapers to the charities we support. Thank you!
Another donation was made in September, by Farzana, on behalf of the EAWL. This time the children of Rhonda Mosque benefited from the donation of much needed food items. Thank you!
On 1st September, 2025, Farzana, once again, bought and delivered Kes50,000 worth of foodstuff to the Ngala school for the deaf, on behalf of EAWL. A Heartfelt appreciation from the children of the school!
During the month of August 2025, Redempta, our member and also Councillor, purchased and delivered food items worth Kes50,000 to the Arap Moi Children's Home, here in Nakuru.
It didn't end there. She further delivered Sanitary towels for girls at Canaan Village. Thank you all for your continued support!
Farzana and Razia donating food supplies to Ngala School for Deaf Children; also present is the Head Mistress who told our ladies that they "appreciate EAWL support more than words can express, thank you so much".

Our branch helps women care for their donkeys. Women in Africa are the owners of donkeys to help with carrying water, firewood and household chores.
Donations to the Ronda Mosque Charity, Ngala School for the Deaf with Razia and Farzana and to the St Luke's Children's Home with Wambui and Janet in August 2024 . Money was raised from our raffle for the Second Council meeting that was postponed in June in Njoro.
Redempta and Mrs Oduya from Arap Moi Children's Home donating food and visiting the babies and the children at the Home. The children are brought to the Home by the Police who have found the abandoned babies and the Home cares for them hand in hand with the Government of Kenya. They are sent to the local schools and universities. This is our longest lasting charity and they are so happy that we have dedicated so many years to the Home.
Mrs Oduya remembers Mrs Pauline Joslyn well. Mrs Oduya will be handing over to one of her assistants soon as she is getting on in years.
