The pristine valley
As you drive through the buzzing cities of the San Fran bay area towards the southwest, you can feel the chaos fading away as you approach the mountains of sierra nevada. While nature is company enough in such places, the companionship of a couple or, in my case, five friends are preferred. The car ride alongside the Merced River was very usual where five pairs of eyes spotted different things, and five different minds convinced themselves that what they saw was the best sight available at that location. With all the laughter we pulled into a parking lot carved out of a cluster of pine trees (shown in the right). What looked ordinary at first sight turned out to be one of the most memorable places I have visited!
Like every desi who ever traveled anywhere, the first thing we asked ourselves was, "khane ka kya karna hai?" translation - "What do we do about the food?" This statement is like a cultural tick imparted by our parents, which buzzes like an alarm clock if we have been awake and mildly active for more than two hours. After debating what kind of local edible vegetation grows around in the area, we took out our theplas and ate them fondly with farsaan and chutney, all while discussing the importance of supporting local food shops and businesses.
