One of the oldest and the largest tournament in Nagaland, played to honour and commmmerate the the sacrifice made byLt. Vikhozo Yhoshü and Kekuojalie Sachü.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
A Student-Led Protest
In 1986, Nagaland, the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) called for a protest. The students voiced their disapproval of the government's decision to introduce the Indian Police Service (IPS) and expand a restricted zone near the border.
Misunderstanding Brews
A misunderstanding fueled tensions. A government official accused students of harassment, leading to limitations on public gatherings.
Seeking Peace Through Negotiation
In an attempt to avoid confrontation, student leaders met with authorities to negotiate. An agreement was reached for a peaceful dispersal of the students.
Tragedy Unfolds
Despite the agreement, police forces opened fire on the departing crowd. The chaos resulted in the heartbreaking deaths of two students, Vikhozo Yhoshü (14) and Kekuojalie Sachü (19).
A Community In Mourning
Nearly 50,000 Nagas came together to pay their respects to the fallen students, Vikhozo and Kekuojalie, at a somber funeral service.
A Lasting Tribute
The NSF established the annual NSF Martyrs' Memorial Trophy as a way to remember this event and honor the sacrifice made by the students.
