Internationalising Teacher Education

Teacher education (TE) is a rather distinct disciplinary field within HE. Research in this sub-field of study produces interesting results in how internationalisation is organised, valued and experienced by TE faculties, academics, and students who study Education. This site presents ongoing research in this field, funded by the Swedish Research Council (2017-03434) and Umeå School of Education.

Project outputs

In our research, we find that while the "intercultural" understanding of students is well developed, the international and intercultural dimensions of experiencing IaH are limited, due to several institutional and learning environment contexts. This has consequences for the social dimensions of future teaching practice (Preparing students for an international future). In addition, the perception of the discipline as "national" is significant in shaping the outlook of students toward international questions and their own future personal and professional mobility (IaH and students of Education).

In this respect, students who study within Education and Teacher Education programmes differ significantly from students in other disciplines within the Sciences, but even Social Sciences (Disciplinary contexts and the filtering of internationalisation).
