🌍 Selected Participant – Journalist Training on Climate Change and Migration Program: Narratives on Climate Change and Migration
Organizer: International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
Duration: 01–03 July 2026 | Venue: ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal
Selected as one of 26 journalists from 6 countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan) across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region through a competitive open application process.
Participated in an intensive, in-person, fully sponsored journalist training designed to strengthen evidence-based and human-centred reporting on the complex links between climate change and migration.
Developed skills to interpret climate science, analyse migration narratives, work with data and expert sources, and produce nuanced, rights-based stories grounded in lived experiences and local realities.
Gained critical frameworks for challenging oversimplified, crisis-driven media narratives on climate-related mobility — with emphasis on ethical reporting, careful terminology, and intersectional storytelling.
Connected with a regional network of ~26 journalists and climate experts, contributing to a cross-border community of practice for climate migration reporting across South Asia and the HKH.
Committed to publishing at least one story in international, national, or local media by December 2026 as part of the programme's output mandate.
Programme Agenda:
Day 1 – Rethinking climate change, migration, and media narratives: global and regional perspectives on climate-induced mobility; key terminologies; myths and misconceptions; rural-to-urban displacement and adaptation pathways; peer exchange.
Day 2 – Data, visual storytelling, and intersectional reporting: interpreting climate and migration data; framing and emotional narratives in visual media; resilience and adaptation stories; insights from the SUCCESS project.
Day 3 – Editorial practice, story development, and pitching: cross-country media analysis; newsroom simulation; story pitch lab; drafting evidence-based, nuanced climate migration stories.
