For our computational tools for data science course, our team used 5 years of articles scraped from the Boston Globe and homicide data to study differences in news coverage of different racial groups using python, specifically coverage of homicides and topic analysis for articles that explicitly mention a racial or ethnic group.
For our data science in R course, our team used this Washington Post dataset on all police shootings in the US between 2015 and 2020. We analyzed and visualized racial discrimination in police shootings, and compared trends across different cities. I also created an interactive map using a Shiny App in R to visualize trends in fatal police shootings.
