She was a respectful princess. She was beautiful just like her mother. That beauty would ultimately be the downfall in her life, but also save her. She is placed among the stars to live on. This is how people on earth remember her story.
Andromeda was living her daily life as a princess. She knew how vain her family was, but that's what helped them rule the kingdom. People would do anything the family said. The day that Poseidon had called upon Cassiopeia and Cepheus, Andromeda stayed home in the kingdom. She saw all the rain and storms but didn't think much of it. Her ignorance is what caught her off guard. As she roamed the halls she noticed everything seemed quiet. In fact, it was too quiet. She called out, "Mother! Father!" but was answered with silence.
She could hear the rain getting louder. As she walked from room to room she noticed water under her feet. She yelled in fear, "Why is it flooding? What is happening to the kingdom?"
As the water kept rising below her she found herself greeted by the Nereids. Andromeda was frightened and knows this is all happening because of her parents. She shouted, "Let me go! Why are you doing this?"
The Nereids laughed at her ignorance and responded, "Oh you didn't know? Your mother felt as if she was more beautiful than us. What a shame it must be that you have to die all because she wouldn't stop boasting."
Andromeda's eyes widened. She stopped struggling to get away. Her heart started beating faster. She knew that she was going to die. "There was no use to try to escape," she thought.
She knew that the flood was Poseidon's doing and he would never stop looking for her. They brought her to this unearthly sized rock wrapped in chains. She heard loud rumbles fill the earth with fear. She wasn't quite sure if it was thunder or something worse. It was Ketos.
As they reached the rock, she was drained of all her energy. The Nereids chained Andromeda up on the rock and left. All of her hope was lost as she laid her head down, waiting for her death. To her surprise she heard voices approaching her. She looked up in a haze. One voice felt familiar to her. It was her father. She thought she was being saved. "Help me...." she murmured with the little energy she had left.
It wasn't until the voice got closer and the chains started to rattle when she noticed her dad was also bound to the rock. She could hear him praying to any and all gods in hopes someone would save them. She then heard her father shout, "Oh my...GODS! THANK YOU!"
Andromeda used the last of her energy to look up and that's when she saw a man on a white horse with wings. She knew in her heart this was her knight in shining armor. Perseus saw Andromeda as he was riding in the sky and fell in love with her beauty. He knew he had to save her. As he got closer to the sea monster he shouted to Cepheus, while pointing to Andromeda, "I will save you as long as I get to marry her."
The father quickly shouted back, "Done!"
This is when Poseidon first laid eyes on Andromeda and fell in love with her. He was about to call off the sea monster when Perseus swooped down to kill it. One slash of his sword and it was dead. Poseidon became very angry. He made his way to Perseus and demanded he give him Andromeda. He refused and told Poseidon they were to get married. Since Perseus and Poseidon had been on many journeys together, Poseidon didn't want to kill Perseus. Instead, he offered him a deal, "You may marry her, but when the day comes that I see you again, I will take her. You may spend the rest of your life hiding from me, but I will always find you." Perseus agreed to this and left to marry Andromeda, in hopes to never see Poseidon again.
Poseidon and Cepheus made their way back to Cassiopeia. As they were approaching her, she was shocked to see the two together, and most of all, to see Cepheus alive. She quickly ran to to them and asked, "Is Andromeda alive?"
Cepheus responded, "Yes, and she is to marry Perseus who saved us."
Poseidon then looked at her and said, "I don't want you anymore. I long to have your daughter. If I ever see Perseus again, I will take Andromeda and she will be mine and only mine forever."
Cassiopeia was filled with so many emotions, but she was the most hurt by what Poseidon said. After all she was in love with him. Her sadness filled with anger as Poseidon ordered them to leave. As she was leaving she looked at Poseidon and shouted, "I'M GOING TO KILL HER!"
Poseidon was so fed up with Cassiopeia that he banished her to the sky. A place where no one could save her and she could never be heard again. He chained her among the stars to watch Andromeda marry Perseus, and was left with the idea Andromeda would spend eternity with Poseidon.
Andromeda and Perseus were married for a while. They had plenty of children together as well. She was happy with her life but knew one day Poseidon would find them. She had to make the sacrifice to either live with the person who tried to kill her or watch over her family. She went to Athena and begged to be placed among the stars so no one else could have her. Athena respectfully granted her wishes. Andromeda is placed among the stars to watch over Perseus and her children. She ultimately died happy.
