Do I need an iCloud account to use My Cheesemaking Journal?
Yes. My Cheesemaking Journal uses your personal iCloud account to securely store and synchronise your journal data.
Do I need to be logged in to my iCloud account to use My Cheesemaking Journal?
Yes. You should remain logged in to your iCloud account so My Cheesemaking Journal can automatically, silently and securely store and synchronise your My Cheesemaking Journal data. You can check your current protection and synchronisation status from How Your Data is Protected on the Dashboard.
Can I install and use My Cheesemaking Journal App on an iPad?
My Cheesemaking Journal will install and run on an iPad. However, to ensure your data remains consistent across devices, you must be logged into the SAME iCloud account on ALL devices before making any changes in My Cheesemaking Journal. It is also strongly recommended that you use the iPad in portrait orientation
What is the best way to get a quick overview of my cheeses?
The Dashboard provides an at-a-glance overview of your current cheeses and anything that may need your attention. For more detail, Manage My Cheeses provides access to the complete record for each cheese.
Can I delete a cheese?
No. My Cheesemaking Journal uses an archive rather than permanently deleting cheese records. This protects the history of your cheesemaking and ensures information associated with completed cheeses remains available.
How do I Archive a cheese?
Open Manage My Cheeses, tap the cheese you wish to archive, then scroll to the bottom of the cheese and select Archive this Cheese. The cheese is removed from your current cheeses but its record and history are retained.
How do I view my Archived cheeses?
Open Archived Cheeses to see cheeses you have previously archived.
How do I unarchive/restore a cheese?
Open Archived Cheeses, tap the cheese you wish to unarchive/restore, then scroll to the bottom of the cheese and select Restore this Cheese. The cheese will return to your current cheeses with its existing journal information retained.
How do I edit an existing cheese?
Open My Cheeses. Tap the cheese you wish to edit, then tap the record you wish to edit to go to the Edit Cheese Details screen. Make the required changes and tap Done to save.
What do the various conditions e.g. Excellent, Good, Watch etc. mean?
A cheese's condition provides a simple way of recording how it is progressing during maturation. Conditions range from cheeses progressing normally through to cheeses that should be monitored or require attention. Updating the condition helps My Cheesemaking Journal identify cheeses that should appear in Inspect Cheeses.
What is Maturation History?
Maturation History provides a chronological record of important changes and events associated with an individual cheese as it progresses through maturation. It allows you to look back and see how the cheese has developed over time. Maturation History for each cheese can be accessed from its cheese record and is found at the bottom of the screen.
Can I see what cheeses need inspecting or attention?
Yes. Inspect Cheeses brings together cheeses currently marked as needing monitoring or attention, allowing you to quickly identify which cheeses should be checked.
Are there any Reports available?
Yes. Reports currently provides a Cheese Summary for an at-a-glance overview of your journal and Journal Activity for reviewing recorded activity across your cheeses.
Can I view a chronological order of Maturation Notes, Storage Movements and other information related to individual cheeses?
Yes. Journal Activity provides a newest-first chronological history of recorded activity. You can also search by Cheese Name or Keyword to quickly find activity relating to a particular cheese or subject.
Are there any cheesemaking recipes included in My Cheesemaking Journal?
Yes. A selection of Cheesemaking Recipes is included in My Cheesemaking Journal. Recipes can be viewed whilst making the cheese and can also be printed from the same screen.
How do Turn Schedules work?
A Turn Schedule records how frequently a cheese should be turned during maturation. My Cheesemaking Journal uses the selected schedule to help identify when the cheese is due to be turned.
I received a notification indicating one or more of my cheeses needs turning. After physically turning the cheese, what do I need to do in My Cheesemaking Journal?
After turning the cheese, open Daily Briefing from the Dashboard, scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Turn Cheeses. Find the cheese you have turned and tap Record Turn Completed. My Cheesemaking Journal will record the completed turn and automatically calculate the next turn date from the cheese’s Turning Schedule.
Can I create my own Cheese Type?
Yes. When creating a new cheese or editing an existing cheese, tap Cheese Type. At the top of the Cheese Type list, tap ‘Can’t find your Cheese Type? Create a Custom Cheese Type by tapping here’, enter the name of the Cheese Type you would like to add, then create it. The new Cheese Type is added to your list and can be used for the cheese you are creating or editing, as well as future cheeses.
Can I create my own Maturation Spaces and Storage Positions?
Yes. You can create Maturation Spaces that reflect your own setup, such as a cheese fridge or maturation cabinet, and add Storage Positions within them to record exactly where each cheese is being matured.
What are iPhone Notifications and in-App Notifications?
iPhone Notifications are system alerts that My Cheesemaking Journal can send to your iPhone to remind you when a cheese is approaching its Expected Ready Date. The Notifications screen inside the app provides an at-a-glance view of current information such as cheeses marked Needs Monitoring and cheeses whose Expected Ready Date is approaching, due or has passed.
Why isn't a cheese appearing in Inspect Cheeses?
Inspect Cheeses includes cheeses whose condition is currently marked Needs Monitoring or Needs Attention. If a cheese is not appearing there, open its record and check its current condition.
Can I change between Celsius and Fahrenheit or grams and ounces?
Yes. Temperature and weight preferences can be changed in Settings. Changing these preferences controls how values are displayed and entered throughout My Cheesemaking Journal; it does not alter your saved cheese records, maturation history, archived records or user-written notes.
Can I search my Journal Activity?
Yes. Journal Activity has separate Search by Cheese Name and Search by Keyword fields. Search by Cheese Name lets you find activity for a particular cheese, while Search by Keyword lets you find recorded activity containing a word or phrase. Search results remain in newest-first chronological order.
Can I search for a culture by the cheese I want to make?
Yes. Cheese Culture Reference includes a Search by Cheese Name field. Enter a cheese style such as Cheddar, Gouda or Brie to find cultures recommended for that style without needing to know the culture name or code first.
Can I print the included cheesemaking recipes?
Yes. The included cheesemaking recipes are available in a printable PDF format, allowing you to print a recipe for convenient reference while making your cheese.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
Your journal data is stored in your personal iCloud account. If you delete and later reinstall My Cheesemaking Journal using the same iCloud account, your journal data can be restored from iCloud.
