replace TYP file in map

Map file

IMG file is the map file in Garmin format.

TYP file is a file that is embedded in IMG file and describes all map signs how they should be presented on map. For instance, how wide a path should look like or what colour a lake should have. For older eyes, I think that everything is to small/light and hard to see and also that the colours for water and open areas are to weak on 5x. That's why I have created my own TYP.

Try my TYP files if you like:

Download maps

In this example I have maps from garmin.opentopomaps.org. See download OSM maps

From there I get two map files, one with map and one with elevation contour.

If both those maps are activated in watch, the contours will be visible above the map.

Rename and copy files

after your name convention.

Examples, see download OSM maps.

Copy the typfiles you would like to use to the same directory as the img-files.

IMG file software

A IMG file is a container for other files, like map tiles and TYP file, but also info like map name and different id's.

To be able to look into IMG files and see content and for instance change the name for the map that is visible in watch, you need a specific application. I use GMapTool. Start it up.

Find the directory where you have your img and typ files with your file browser. Drag the files into GMapTool.

Select first file

Change name visible in watch

Mapset name is the name for the map that is visible on watch.

Change mapset name to something similar to file name, but maybe shortened.

Goto 'Write'-tab and check 'Mapset'.

Write the name to the right (or past it from file name).

Push 'write selected'-button at the bottom.

Go back to 'Files'-tab, and double check that Mapset is changed.

Check existing TYP in IMG file

To be able to replace TYP file, there need to be an existing one. Push 'Info'.

Look at the bottom in the file list and there it should be a TYP file.

Replace TYP

To replace TYP, I use another tool. TypChanger

Start the program and drag the IMG and the new TYP file into it. Push 'Change'.

Press 'Info' button in GMapTool and double chack that fil is replaces.

(It is also possible to replace TYP in GMapTool with some more steps.)

TypChanger

Copy to watch

Copy IMG files to Garmin folder on watch.
