This Lake District is best explored by car, as some areas are difficult to reach using public transport. The main exception is travel to Milan, where the train is often the most convenient option. The nearest station is Ternate–Varano Borghi, with schedules and tickets available on the Trenitalia website: www.trenitalia.com.

Driving into Milan can be challenging due to traffic regulations, restricted zones, and limited access areas that can be difficult to navigate for visitors. If you prefer to drive, a practical option is to park at Lampugnano Parking Lot, on the outskirts of the city, and continue into the center using the metro system.

By train, you can also reach Laveno Mombello, a charming lakeside town on Lake Maggiore and an access point to the lake’s ferry network. It’s a beautiful destination in its own right, with a relaxed atmosphere, scenic views, and easy connections to other towns along the lake.

One of the main attractions in the area is the Borromean Islands. The most convenient town to reach them from is Stresa, where you can easily access boat services to the islands. Stresa is well connected by highway, making it simple to reach by car before continuing the journey by ferry.
