My wife always go sleep before me and she hates when I turn on the light to get into the bedroom. On the other hand, it is very boring and unsafe walk in the dark. To solve this problem, I did a little PCB with leds controled by a 555 in a monostable configuration.
No big deal unless the fact that the circuit is driven by a push button (no current flow when you release it) and the 555 output drives a relay that connects it to VCC. This is a very common configuration on panels for motors.

The great advantage is that there is no standby current so batteries are really not used when the leds are not turned on.
To use, just press the button and go sleep while you have light. Leds turns off after a few seconds making the entire circuit unconnected from the batteries.
