We have teams for 4th - 8th grade Mount Vernon CSD student-athletes during club season.
We work with other teams (basketball and softball) to avoid conflicts to the best of our ability. We wholeheartedly believe that all students should be able to participate in multiple activities and in no manner does our program encourage specialization.
Our season runs from January - mid-March (we end before Spring Break).
We will sometimes have a couple of “tryout” dates in late November/Early December so that we can divide teams. We never cut players. All Mount Vernon 4th - 8th graders are able to play.
What is our purpose?
We seek to develop each athlete who participates as a whole person, teammate and volleyball player in a developmentally appropriate manner.
We lead with the value of Growth Mindset- because individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts). We seek to promote a vision for our athletes that they are all a work in progress and that when coachable and hardworking, they will continue to develop as volleyball players and human beings.
Intrinsic motivation is a term that refers to a person's behavior when it's driven by personal satisfaction—doing something purely because it's fun or enjoyable.
To do the same with Intrinsic motivation- is important for task persistence, for seeing a project through, and for ensuring exploration of solutions. Intrinsic motivation is also accompanied by a positive attitude. The love of volleyball, hard work, teamwork and for this to be owned by each individual player is important to her growth.
This is an idea to consider:
If your daughter is one of the “best” right now…... .there will be people nipping at her heels – remind her the most important thing to do is to work on continuous improvement.
If your daughter is new to volleyball, or a developing player, remind her that effort and hard work pay off!
Continual Improvement is a life skill that we hope to instill as part of our training.
Playing Time:
There is absolutely no guarantee of playing time for any athlete, regardless of age.
We want to provide opportunities for both the teams and individuals to be successful and that will help drive the coaching decisions.
To be clear, there will be an effort to involve each kid at some point during each tournament, but if their skills and/or volleyball IQ do not put them in a position to be successful, they may spend more time as a supportive bench teammate then as a player on the floor.
Please do not have a discussion with your daughter’s coach about playing time. We need to encourage your daughter to communicate with her coach. Each coach on our staff is approachable and invites discussions with your daughter on how to move her skills forward.
We will talk about what it takes to be a successful volleyball player in the Mount Vernon program. Skills are only the start – demands on volleyball IQ, emotional composure and communication only grow as she advances in the program.
Athlete Behavior:
Your daughter signs an athlete Code of Conduct as part of her USAV registration – we expect each athlete to be a team player, to be respectful of teammates, coaches and opponents and to represent Mount Vernon well. If this does not occur, removal from the team might be a consequence.

Scholarships:
We genuinely do our best to keep our club fees low to provide a playing opportunity for any interested players. While we don’t want anyone to miss the opportunity to play, our club cannot provide scholarships at this time however if payment is a concern, we have a couple options to provide support:
-We are happy to provide a monthly payment program from January-March ($ per month based on the team your daughter is on).
-If you are in need of a scholarship, we can connect you with resources within the district for this support.
Please reach out to Maggie Willems, Club Director as we handle this per individual request.
