Birds played an important role in both World Wars. Carrier pigeons were used to carry messages over long distances, often carrying news from the Front Line. Unfortunately Germans trained hawks to kill any carrier pigeons they saw so they could not deliver these important messages.

It wasn't just pigeons that played an important part. This is a story of a canary called Bobby and his best friend Jack. Jack's job was to dig tunnels and Bobby's job was to detect poisonous gas and warn the men. Canaries were also used in our coal mines on the West Coast to do exactly the same job.
During WW1 in France, a young Kiwi soldier who misses his family becomes friends with a little bantam hen. This friendship brings comfort to him and his fellow soldiers. Based on a true story.
