Keynote Speakers


Georgina Born is Professor of Anthropology and Music at University College London. Previously she held Professorships at the Universities of Oxford (2010-21) and Cambridge (2006-10) and visiting professorships at UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, McGill, Princeton, Oslo and Aarhus Universities. She also had a professional life as a musician in experimental rock, jazz and free improvisation. Her work combines ethnographic and theoretical writings on music, sound, television and digital media. She directed the European Research Council-funded research program Music, Digitization, Mediation (2010-15) and in 2021 was awarded an ERC grant for Music and Artificial Intelligence: Building Critical Interdisciplinary Studies.


Doug Turnbull is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Ithaca College. His research passion is using recommender systems to promote music by talented local artists. He is currently working on Localify.org which explores using music event recommendations and playlist generation to support local music communities. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation and is being developed by a large team of undergraduate students at Ithaca College. His general research interests include music information retrieval, machine learning, and humane technology.Â
