Murphys Area Community Tennis Association

From Facebook About Section:

The Murphys Area Community Tennis Association is a nonprofit corporation founded in 2010 by Murphys-area tennis players. The group's goal was to organize and raise funds to re-surface the two public tennis courts in Murphys. It was also committed to an annual fundraising plan that would not only support tennis for adults but also provide instruction and encouragement to junior players.

The board also makes the ongoing maintenance of the facility a priority.

Thirty years ago two public tennis courts were built behind the old Murphys Historic School House spearheaded by local tennis pro and school teacher, Hoppy Hoffman.  Over the years the courts were maintained by a few local citizens, but wear and tear on the courts had become so great that they became unsafe and almost unplayable.

In the fall of 2010, the Murphys Area Community Tennis Association (MACTA) was formed from local, concerned citizens to repair these two courts and to support tennis in the Murphys and Highway 4 corridor.

MACTA was initially given $30,000 by an anonymous benefactor for the sole purpose of resurfacing the two courts.  An additional $5,000 was earned by MACTA through donations and fundraisers to help pay for MACTA’s incorporation and non-profit organization status.

The two public courts are available for public play (including evening tennis), adult and youth clinics, free periodic instruction to elementary and middle school students, and local tournaments.  The refurbished courts are a beautiful asset for recreational tennis players of all ages, locals and visitors alike.

The initial focus of MACTA was to have a U.S.T.A. approved court contractor completely remove and replace the existing courts, replace the chain-link fence, and repaint the court lines.

The refurbished courts are now, the only two public courts open to the greater Murphys' community without restriction.

All remaining funds and monies from subsequent fundraisers and endowments have been used towards improvements to the immediate area outside the courts themselves including, but not limited to benches, landscaping, umbrellas, picnic tables, water and lighting bills.

The two Murphys' courts were resurfaced and repaired.  Three competitive bids were received and a contractor chosen.  The bid included removal and replacement of the surrounding chain-link fence,  placing a Petro mat over the existing courts, putting 4” to 6” of rock over the Petro mat and then 3 layers of surface material followed by painting of the lines for the courts.  Completion took 4 weeks. The completed courts have provided the Murphys area with safe, durable, and attractive courts for community play for over 10 years now.

A)  MACTA incorporated in the fall of 2010 and given $30,000 as seed money for court repairs.

B) MACTA received its non-profit status (501(c) (3)) in March of 2011.

C) May, 2011 MACTA enters into a Joint Usage Agreement lease with the Ebbetts Pass Veterans Memorial District to care for and maintain control of the Murphys Tennis Courts.

D)  By the fall of 2011, the courts were completely resurfaced.

The Native Daughters of the Golden West offered MACTA the chance to insure completion in the time frame of the summer of 2011 and not have to wait another year.  Waiting another year would have increased the courts degradation and the courts would have become completely unplayable and a safety hazard to the community.

MACTA, as a non-profit entity, has received numerous donations since its inception through grants, membership dues, and tournament fundraisers.  MACTA is currently taking care of the surrounding landscaping and periodic resurfacing of the courts.  We are also awarding tennis scholarships to Bret Harte athletes every spring.
