RULES
1. A clean shaven face, or pre-existing beard is the accepted starting point for this competition. You have between now and April 2026 to perfect your look.
2. Entry is open to anyone who can grow facial hair.
3. You must be present at the Murchison Carnival Day (Sunday 05 April 2026) for your facial hair to be judged.
Register at the Murch Merch stand (onsite) before 1.00pm, where further judging details will also be provided.
4. Judges decisions are final.

George Fairweather Moonlight beard: most closely resembling G F Moonlight, forefather of Hampden.
George Fairweather Moonlight - Gold miner, farmer, store-keeper, hotelier, postmaster and unofficial town sheriff of Hampden (Murchison). Moonlight lived in the area for more than 20 years and there are many local stories about his time here, as well as landmarks either named by him or after him.
FUN FACTS:
· Most men don’t hit peak beard growth until their early to mid-30s.
· Beard hair generally grows at about 12mm per month so if you are starting from clean shaven you’ll be looking at a solid 15cm of growth by the time you reach day 365 (Disclaimer – there are many reasons why some people can’t grow consistent facial hair, check it out online.)
The Murchison Fashion in the Field Competition is all about style and appropriateness.
RULES:
Entrants will be required to dress within an era from 1870’s – 1980’s.
Outfits to be appropriate to the chosen era.
Grooming will play a part with deportment being judged.
The overall look will stand out as being iconic for its time.
Adults and children will be judged separately.
Accessories such as hats, hairdo’s, shoes and costume jewellery are encouraged.
This event is open to anyone with a flair for dressing up.
Enter on Carnival Day. This is a free event. Prizes will be available.
Entries open 01 July 2025 and must be received no later than 4pm, 27 October 2025.
The 150 Year Anniversary Celebration Writing Competition winner’s names will be released in December 2025.
A compilation of the stories will be released in time for the Easter Anniversary Celebration in April 2026.
Prizes will be awarded in both the Junior and Senior sections for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Theme: Growing Up in Murchison - The Childhood and Teenage Years.
Eligibility Criteria
Participation is restricted to past or present Murchison residents.
Fee
There will be no participation fee charged for the competition.
Competition Rules
Maximum word limit – 1500 words. No minimum word limit.
The story will have a title as decided by the entrant.
The story will be written based on the lived experiences of the writer.
The story will be the original work of the entrant and not be AI or copied from anywhere.
The story should ideally be typed in size 12 font but hand-written stories will be accepted.
The story should not have grammatical errors or use language unsuitable for the public.
Entrants will be classed either as Junior (18 years and under) or Senior (19 years and over).
Entrants are to email their entries to murchison150th@gmail.com or drop to the office at Murchison Area School or post to Kathryn Mason, c/- Murchison Area School, 61 Waller Street, Murchison 7007 with name and contact details and class (Junior/Senior) clearly visible at the top of each page of writing. Entries close 4pm 27 Oct 2025.
Judging decisions will be based on content, creativity, and topic fitting the criteria.
The decision of the Judge/s will be final.
A compilation booklet will be held at the Murchison Museum, with the winning entries on display at the Murchison 150th Year Anniversary Celebration in April 2026.
This competition has been organised by the members of the Murchison 150 Year Anniversary Celebration Committee to continue Murchison’s traditional story-telling, as started by our founding families.
Let’s decorate the town for the Murchison 150 Year Anniversary Celebration!
The theme is “Old Days and Eco-friendly Ways”, and we’re looking for non-plastic, natural or home-made decorations, recycled decorations … or get creative with flax, pinecones, dried or fresh flowers, wood offcuts, small stones or broken crockery.
Families, get out and get active decorating your letterbox (or front fence if you don’t have a letterbox).

a. Physical address of the letter box or fence being judged, including street number.
b. Your name and contact details.
RULES:
1. Only letterboxes or fences within the Murchison township boundary will be judged, those are the properties that the town postie delivers to.
2. Letterboxes must be ready for judging by Sunday 22nd March.
3. You must decorate your own property, no pranking the neighbours!
4. The decorations must not get in the way of the postie delivery service.
5. Even if your letter box is plastic NO extra plastic is to be used.
6. If you use fresh foliage or flowers as decoration, you can change them regularly to keep them fresh.
7. Winners will be announced at the Carnival on Sunday 05th April.
8. The judge’s decisions are final. Prizes will be awarded.
9. Decorations are to stay in place until Monday 06th April.
Judges will visit your entry between Monday 23rd March and Thursday 02nd April and will leave a note in your letterbox when they have viewed the decorations.
