"Safer and more efficient batteries"
Batteries are key to our daily lives and to the transition toward an electrified society that is neutral in greenhouse gas emissions. Lithium-ion batteries represented a major breakthrough in terms of capacity, size, absence of memory effect, and charging speed. However, they are more expensive, can only withstand a limited number of charge cycles, and may overheat. In fact, there have been numerous incidents involving fires and explosions caused by these devices. We interviewed Miguel Muñoz Rojo, a researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (CSIC), who has been awarded one of the prestigious Consolidator Grants from the European Research Council to investigate how to manage the heat generated in batteries so that they become more efficient and safer.

“I thank you all, both at CSIC headquarters and at ICMM, for the support provided throughout this process. I am very pleased to contribute to the growth of this institution with this prestigious project, and I hope it will yield strong scientific results.”
This is how Miguel Muñoz Rojo (Murcia, 1987), a researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid, announced that he had been awarded one of the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grants. It was early November, and the upheaval (and its consequences) had just begun.
“Companies need scientists who can offer creative solutions.”
Last November, Miguel Muñoz Rojo, a researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), received one of the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grants awarded by the European Research Council. The researcher from Murcia speaks about his project, Thermo2Deal, which focuses on heat management.
