Our group focuses on the synthesis and characterization of early transition metal and rare earth element complexes. On the day-to-day, students in this lab are synthesizing ligands and their complexes of metals, collecting NMR spectra, collecting absorption and emission spectra, making electrochemical measurements, and conducting photochemical reactions. These activities support our research goals of:
1) Finding effective (and novel) methods of separating metals for applications in recycling and purifying metals for their applications (e.g. in nuclear reactor control rods, permanent magnets in wind turbines, LEDs).
2) Studying the photocatalytic reactions that can be achieved by group(IV) and lanthanide complexes.
