In October 2010, Arya signed on for the film with N. Linguswamy's Thirupathi Brothers production house replacing UTV as producers.[10][11] However, within months, Arya had pulled out as had Linguswamy. In June 2011, a new Mumbai-based company had taken the production reins whilst Jiiva, after the commercial success of his political thriller Ko, had signed on to portray the lead role.[12] Later that month, it was announced that Narain, who had worked with Mysskin in both Chithiram Pesuthadi and Anjathe, would portray the role of the lead antagonist with reports suggesting that the role would be reminiscent of The Joker / Scarecrow from The Dark Knight and Batman Begins respectively. Narain claimed that his villainy in the film would be totally brutal, where his character in the film has no shades and is absolutely negative.[13][14][15] In early July 2011, sources reported that Amala Paul had been signed up to portray the lead female character in the film,[16] which the actress dismissed, with Dhananjayan of UTV also confirming that Amala was not approached for the role.[17] Pooja Hegde, who is the second runner-up of the 2011 Miss Universe India, was eventually finalized as the female lead.[18] Krishna Kumar, who had scored for Mysskin's Yuddham Sei in 2010, was selected as the film composer over two other music directors, while Madhan Karky would pen the lyrics, associating for the first time with Mysskin.[19] Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao was added to the cast in November 2011, which proved false, and he was replaced by Girish Karnad, while Prakash Raj was also reported to be playing an important role. The following month, Nassar was selected to portray a police officer.[20][21][22]

Mugamoodi audio was launched on July 20th, 2012 by Vijay. The music album boasts 11 tracks. Out of which, there are 3 full-fledged songs and remaining 7 are theme music. Unlike previous Mysskin's album which has a mandatory kutthu, all songs in Mugamoodi can be classified as melody.

Mugamoodi theme tracks show music director K's maturity and confidence already in his second movie. "Come lets fall in love" theme is a piano version of "Vaaya Moodi" song. "Lullaby for Loss" theme is yet another pathos version of the same song. "Maayavi" flute theme is directly based on the Chinmayi song with the same title. "Blue Panther on the Prowl" theme is already heard in the background in the teaser. "Cape of Good Hope", 'Hell Heaven and the Ladder' theme and "Don't drive your car with this music" are the remaining themes with BGM structure.

In the earlier movie, K had notable background tracks in Yuththam Sei which didn't get the attention they deserved, probably due to short window between audio release and movie release. Overall, the Mugamoodi music is grim and raw with underlying layers of melody which is very effective in setting the mood for the movie. ff782bc1db
