Within the interconnected, entwined, and constantly-self-enravelling multiverse we call the Tangle, most beings who make their business by travelling the Ways that connect the many thousands of worlds are known as Coalescents. When a being is first exposed to the rawness of the extradimensional energy that suffuses the Termini and Ways that connect the worlds of the Tangle together, their essence is magnetized to all other of their incarnations throughout the worlds. When a being traverses the Tangle and becomes Coalescent, every single version of that being in every world suddenly fuses and combines into a singular being, with all the experiences, abilities, and memories of all their component parts' lives.
In one world, not so close to the core Cluster of worlds near the center of the Tangle that it grew mundane, but not so far out to be too fantastical, a girl grew to be a powerful enough essokineticist, or Reality Bender, to catch a glimpse into the weave of the Tangle for the first time, the first of her world to glimpse the realms beyond. Intrigued, she pressed, and eventually, through experimentation, she ripped open her first Terminus. A scraggly thing, more a wound in the world than a doorway into realms beyond as they're meant to be, but she was unpracticed at the time. Glimpsing the weave for the first time, she stepped through the Terminus, and abruptly felt her other selves rushing from uncountable worlds to collide with her. When the Terminus closed, Muffin Knight stood as the only one of herself in all of creation, now bearing the mind and skills of millions of herselves, and she was far too curious not to press onwards. Her second Terminus was much neater than the first; this was hardly the only world in which she was a reality bender, and other selves had been sorceresses, wizards, scientists, and all the like. The Tangle opened up to her, and she took to it gleefully.
Turns out, currency is a little different, when travelling between full worlds, many of them vastly and wildly different than each other in all ways. Physical money is often worthless, since even if two different worlds had minted the same currency, even minute differences in serial number might make your bills ring as counterfeit. Muffin found that in reality, the way that trade was managed between beings such as herself, and even higher, was through sentiment. Objects of historical or personal value, memories, fragments of identity, all of these things are up for trade. She struggled for a few Cycles, making do off of the thousands of selves' worth of memories she had to trade off, before she happened upon a tired old-young man who called himself Wicker. Wicker was a Scribe, so he proclaimed, a sort of person long since thought lost to the Tangle, a relic from when its oldest and greatest civilization fell. Scribes were beings who bore the ability to glean and inscribe the very stories of people and things onto paper. Pure, encapsulated story trapped in their books, treasures beyond measure in the landscape of the Tangle. Wicker, however, was ancient, and perhaps the last of his kind, and when he saw Muffin, he must have realized something about her that made him pause. A Twinsoul resonance, not that Muffin knew of such a thing to recognize it at the time herself, though she would eventually learn what it meant. Wicker gave her his notebook and his blade, the implement for cleaving the stories free of the people, places, and things that held them, and departed. Muffin paused, having thought that Scribes were the only ones even capable of wielding the tools, but when she tried her hand, cleaving one of her own stories away from her being with a flick of the blade, the words imprinted themselves on the pages all the same. Muffin smiled, and set back out into the web of the Tangle, intent on seeking stories for her fortune.
After having amassed enough for a sensible down payment, Muffin set about searching for a more permanent residence solution, at least one befitting of her lifestyle as a travelling scribe. There are many small, undeveloped or unstarted worlds populating the outer edges of the Tangle, really just vast spaces coursing with raw Ylem that those with the abilities can mold as they like. Unfortunately, of course, all of these plots of endless possibility had been obtained by some godlike being or another. So, in her case, without the ability to buy one of them outright, Muffin realized that she was in the curious position of having to search for a roommate to rent with.
April Cloverleigh was a name Muffin came across after asking around, though nobody she asked really knew much about the woman or where she came from. Each of them seemed to have a slightly different impression of April, and gave Muffin a slightly different physical description. All the same, though, Muffin reached out, and when she and April met up, she was shocked by how immediately well they got on. April was charming, fun, and a laid-back presence to artfully counterbalance Muffin's more energetic, enthusiastic, and unpredictable nature, and even in those early days, they got on like a house on fire. April was a photographer, travelling worlds to find beautiful things to capture a fleeting moment of in still time, much like how Muffin travelled seeking her stories, so they were both more than capable of making rent. They settled on a small pocket world with enough Ylem to form into a comfortably-sized apartment to their perfected specifications, and from then on, that's how they lived.
To her knowledge, the modus operandi of the Scribes of old was to not get involved, but Muffin is no Scribe of old, and she's far too impetuous for that. When she diverts herself with an adventure to later transform into a story, it's with gusto and enthusiasm; stories lived to the fullest and enjoyed for every moment possible always did seem to come out more valuable and precious.
A unique being in all the worlds of creation, Muffin Knight, the Coalescent Scribe, lives her stories to the fullest, and enjoys every moment of them that she can.
Bestie/Roommate/Situationship
Honestly after a certain point, it just becomes easier to think of each other as partners, their lives are so intermingled.
Plus, they fuck *so* much.
Roommate/Friend
Muffin's a lot less tough on Rox for her laziness than April, but not *completely* permissive. They bond well though.
Twinsoul
Muffin and Wicker aren't that involved in each other's lives, but due to the fact that they share the same soul, they do check in occasionally. They occupy very different sides and perspectives of life in the Tangle, but they do exchange gifts and pleasantries.
?????: Eldritch landlord whose name evades pronunciation. (he likes April more, she deals with him whenever they need to)
Noelle Rosabelle: Muffin's erstwhile witchcraft & wizardry tutor, now close friend and confidant within the profession.
Sydell Okiro: Well-meaning, if bumbling, old friend of April's that has developed a rather massive crush on Muffin. She does string him on a little.
Badraan Bolshevim: Gold-skinned demigod, occasional sugar daddy
Mya Bright: High-society contact within Cluster politics, sometimes gives hints towards good adventures
Inkswill: Reaper that Muffin technically cheated a good while back, but he's chill, and they make a game of it
Rhys Far: Contact within the Wayfarer's Guild, which is basically Muffin's union. Also sometimes her agent.
Ralziere Thothii: Demon prince, occasionally useful favours, and whose marriage proposal is perpetually standing.
Xander Knight: Muffin's biological brother. Back on her homeworld. Thinks she's dead. She checks up secretly now and then.
Holist: Adventuring partner/Ylemmic nexus being whose fate seems entwined with Muffin's in some unknown way
