Our History
Created in 1928, the Rifle Team was the first WPIAL sport integrated at the High School. WPIAL teams compete in the prone “lying down” position. Athletes lay prone on a pad, with their dominant hand positioned on the trigger and their other hand acting as a stabilizer. A 10 by 12 inch piece of paper with 11 bulls-eyes roughly 2 inches in diameter is hung fifty feet down range. Competitors are given 15 minutes to complete their target, utilizing the center target for calibration, they then shoot 1 shot into the ten surrounding targets. The idea is to get 10 bull’s-eyes each worth 10 points, with each ring on the target decreasing the score by one point. It is possible to earn a score of 10 without it being considered a bulls-eye. A perfect score would be 100-10X with “X” signifying the number of bull’s-eyes.
