Although the video below is outdated by a few years, it still provides an excellent idea of what goes into the sport of rifle.
How safe is this sport?
Since the start of this team, it has been estimated that 2.5 million rounds have been fired on the MTL High School range, and to date, there has never been an injury. All competitive shooting events are monitored by Certified Range Safety Officers and coaches.
What equipment will the student need?
All equipment and ammunition is supplied by the school. All of the schools use very specialized equipment including mats, gloves, slings, leather coats and Olympic grade Anschutz target rifles. Ammunition is considerably more accurate (and expensive) than what is found at the local sporting goods store.
Is there any “kick” to these rifles?
The answer is an emphatic NO. The rifle weighs about 13 lbs., the projectile weighs 40 gr., recoil is all but non-existent.
What is the benefit of competing on the Rifle Team?
The student will enjoy all the benefits of being involved in a team competition. Rifle is unique in that it is not an adrenaline driven sport. To be successful in this competition, the student will learn to control his emotions as well as his body; in fact, advanced students will learn to slow their heartbeat and lower their blood pressure in order to minimize shooting errors. The student will be taught that the target is the “test” in proving that the student has mastered the mind and body processes and that firing the shot is only proving mastery of that process.
As a parent, you may notice increased abilities of concentration more control over emotions. Students engaged in Rifle typically have higher GPA’s than the rest of the student body. In fact, the Rifle Team has always been among the top 3 Scholar Athlete Teams.
