Mt. Haven was started so many years ago, deep in my 16-year-old heart while working for a Boys & Girls Club in my hometown. I learned so much about children there and knew then I wanted to spend the rest of my life teaching.
From there I spent several semesters as an education major at Ouachita Baptist University, ultimately finishing my Bachelor's Degree in Spanish.
I have spent the majority of the last 28 years teaching children, in many different learning environments (including my own children ages 21, 17, and 9). Somewhere in the middle, the Lord saw fit to gift me with the most precious opportunity of homeschooling. That journey with all of it's ups and downs has chiseled out a vision in my heart for a certain style of educating students, which is what you will find at Mt. Haven
It's relationship-oriented. It's slow. It's hands-on and extremely fun. Education here feels different, like you've just reached far into the past and borrowed something. We aren't just following a book or babysitting your child. We are instilling a love for lifelong learning. We are sparking curiosity. And we are doing it all while encouraging your kids to be who God designed them to be.
Mt. Haven is academically sound. We don't believe in simply providing a play time for your children or letting technology do the teaching. With a strong system for classroom management and a well-educated perspective on childhood development, our classroom is never dull, yet our students are constantly learning.
"Saturation learning" is how we approach concepts at Mt. Haven, no matter what curriculum we choose.
We make ample room for questions and curiosity which allows students to wrestle with ideas taught until they're comfortable with them.
We use a modge podge of curriculum including Mystery of History, Berean Builders Science, group projects, songs, and a plethora of hands-on opportunities to anchor concepts into our little students' minds.
Keeping things small and intimate is at the very core of what makes us different. We believe strongly in a stable, small learning environment for our students, because group size can largely affect a child's ability to focus and feel safe. When distractions are at a low and safety is at a high, the brain can focus on what is important.
We also highly prioritize a wholesome environment for children, where their minds are preserved from worldly worries and instead focused on the goodness of Jesus Christ and all that He created for us to learn about.
Mt. Haven is committed to maintaining group sizes that foster learning. We function in pods of 10-12 learners (max) at a time, depending on cohesiveness and learning styles/needs for that group.
