Mt. Haven was started so many years ago, deep in my heart while working for a Boys & Girls Club. I have spent the majority of the last 28 years teaching children, in many different learning environments (including my own children ages 20, 17, and 9).
After spending quite a bit of that time teaching in government-influenced institutions, the Lord saw fit to gift me with the most precious opportunity of homeschooling. That journey has chiseled out a vision in my heart for a certain style of educating students, which is what you will find at Mt. Haven
If you could travel back in time to a one room schoolhouse where children of different ages and developmental levels all came together for the purposing of learning, not just academics, but also life skills, healthy relationships and a biblical education, you would see the heart of Mt. Haven Microschool.
This model allows for learning of not only subject matter, but also of morals, compassion, community, group collaboration and more.
We strive to inspire a deep love for learning in addition to a strong sense and practice of biblical characteristics.
Mt. Haven is academically sound. We don't believe in simply babysitting children or letting technology do the teaching. With a strong system for classroom management and a well-educated perspective on childhood development, our classroom is never dull, yet our students are constantly learning.
"Saturation learning" is how we approach concepts at Mt. Haven, no matter what curriculum we choose.
Minds of all ages need to process what they learn and time seems to be the key in this matter. We make ample room for questions and curiosity which allows students to wrestle with ideas taught until they're comfortable with them.
We don't push to "finish the book", because we use a finely curated variety of curriculum including The Good and Beautiful, Mystery of History, group projects, songs, and a plethora of hands-on opportunities to anchor concepts into our little students' minds.
Keeping things small and intimate is at the very core of what makes us different. We believe strongly in a stable, small learning environment for our students, because group size can largely affect a child's ability to focus and feel safe. When distractions are at a low and safety is at a high, the brain can focus on what is important.
We also highly prioritize a wholesome environment for children, where their minds are preserved from worldly worries and instead focused on the goodness of Jesus Christ and all that He created for us to learn about.
Mt. Haven is committed to maintaining group sizes that foster learning. We function in pods of 10-12 learners (max) at a time, depending on cohesiveness and learning styles/needs for that group.
