Glaciers at and around Mount Rainier play a crucial part of the national parks geologic history. There are 28 named glaciers at Mount Rainier and all of them have a different story of how they came to be.

There has been multiple landslides and avalanches in the past of the mountain, causing a lot of material to erode and fall downhill.
A lot of the rock that currently lives on the mountain has been weakened by the past erosion processes, making it less resistant to future erosion.
There is less ice and glaciers on the mountain now then there was in the past, as you can see in the photo to the left.
The biggest glacier that surrounds Mount Rainier is called the Emmons Glacier which covers about 4.3 square miles
Second largest is the Winthrop Glacier which lays right next to the Emmons
The third largest is called the Carbon glacier and this is also the glacier that has the largest volume at the park

Glaciers also play a big part in Mt. Rainier's erosion process by fighting the building processes of the lava and filling up the nearby valleys on the mountain with ice. Some of the ice from the glaciers were so thick that not even lava was able to completely break through.
Covering 25 square miles Mount Rainier has 25 glaciers surrounding the national park. They cover about 25 square miles and has the most abundant glacier concentration in the whole United States! They are always moving and evolving, due to the movement of the ice on the mountain. As snow accumulates on the mountain, it forms into ice, creating a massive, slow-moving sheet. something about these glaciers is that they carve deep valleys into the sides of the mountains making crevice's that are usually in the shape of a U. As they slide down the mountain it grinds the rocks down to be smooth indents. They play a huge role in the environment in the region's hydrology—feeding rivers with meltwater that sustains surrounding ecosystems.
