Digital Citizenship

Media Balance & Well-being

  • Students get to analyze their social media use and recognize how their time on the internet affects their well-being.

  • Students will determine if they are addicted/heavily reliant on their devices.

  • I want to teach this within mathematics because:

  • Students can calculate the amount of time they spend online to determine if they are addicted to their devices.

  • Students have the opportunity to use internet tools to aid in their math problems so it is also important for students to analyze how reliant they are on math devices and tools.

  • Students will also get to learn how to balance all of the activities in their lives. They can learn how to balance internet time, friend time, family time, studying time, excerse time, etc.

  • I also realize how much social media affects our mental health and I think that is an important topic for all subjects.

Relationships & Communication

  • Students will to be able to know how to use their "intrapersonal and interpersonal skills" to build and maintain online & personal relationships.

  • It is important for students to know and understand the dangers of creating relationships online that may lead to grooming, sexting, controlling, etc. Students should be able to recognize the signs

  • Students have the opportunity to have healthy relationships and to communicate with others if they are able to understand the potential of harm of it first.

  • I want to teach this within mathematics because:

    • My students deserve to have a classroom environment that allows them to feel safe, so I want them to know that that can be achieved online and through in-class connections.

    • I would love to create an online environemnt where my students feel comfortable asking each other for help, creating study groups, etc. (I see this happening through twitter hashtags)

News & Media Literacy

  • Students will be able to analyze and be critical about the news and media that they see daily.

  • Students will learn to find and rely on credible sources.

  • Students will recognize the dangers of being blindly influenced by media.

  • I want to teach this within mathematics because:

    • Data often comes from the news and media, so I want my students to know where their information is coming from and if their source is reliable.
