Welcome to my Master of Art in Education (MAED) Showcase! Here you will find a showcase of artifacts that reveal the work I have completed while earning my graduate degree at Michigan State University. During this program, I have pushed my thinking and expanded on my skills in a way that have allowed me to flourish as an educator.
Below you will find artifacts broken into three categories: Literacy, Diversity, and Instruction. These areas are where my focus often was while working in this program. The artifacts in each category represent my learning and strengths as I progressed.
Literacy
As I have worked towards my MAED, I chose to have a concentration area of Literacy. This is given me a direct focus on aspects of literacy such as English Language Learners, how to create assessments that aid those who struggle with reading literacy, and learning best practices for reading and writing.
In a course dedicated to student literacy and assessment, I worked with a student over the course of a semester to assess their literacy levels and implement lessons to help bolster their learning. This project encapsulates the entire process from start to finish to display the progress of the my time with the learner and their successes.
This paper details an observation of a teacher who works with English Language Learners and my reflection on the lesson. As an educator who often has ELLs in the classroom, this project displays my ability to identify strategies for different learners and how to implement them in the classroom.
Diversity
The area of diversity speaks to the time I have invested in learning about culture, both my own and others, and about they way learning and education functions for different people. I have completed projects and papers that explore these ideas and I have furthered the immense importance I feel in understanding diversity.
This assignment was a collaboration with three of my classmates from a course that explored diversity and culture in the classroom. Together, we read Teaching When the World Is on Fire by Lisa Delpit. As a group, we broke down and explored key elements of the text that capture crucial issues.
In the paper linked above, I dive into a text, Protecting the Promise: Indigenous Education Between Mothers and Their Children by Timothy San Pedro. In this essay, I discuss how Indigenous families use culturally sustaining pedagogy and the importance it holds.
This presentation showcases a deep dive into my own culture and language history. I utilize my skills of research to explore where my ancestry is tied to, what languages and dialects were spoken, how they changed over time.
Instruction
As an educator, I will always seek ways to improve my instruction. This area showcases some of my work in doing this. From understanding school systems that instruct behavior to crafting new lesson plans designed specifically for the needs of certain learners, my work in instruction has been significant and gratifying.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
I created a presentation on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in a course that focuses on student behavior. In this presentation I wrote about what PBIS is and why it should be implemented in my school. I demonstrate my ability to effectively teach about a program and highlight it's key points.
Motivation Case and Assessment
The motivation case and assessment is a paper where I explain and reflect on my time working with a student who has challenges finding motivation in the classroom. Here, I show my ability to consistently adapt in order to find strategies that work and craft lesson plans specifically made to help motivate learning.
Lesson Plan for Literacy Learners
Above is a lesson plan I created for two literacy learners. This plan was designed to specifically help two of my students. By creating this lesson, it shows how I chose strategies and materials that would benefit the literacy levels and learning styles of my students.
