In first grade, we follow 5 classroom expectations. All students are taught and reminded of these daily through nurturing encouragement. We believe these expectations are for the best interest of your student and their success, safety, and environment.
Follow directions quickly and quietly.
Wait for your turn to speak.
Stay in your space.
Make smart choices.
Use kind words and actions.
Our 1st Grade discipline plan revolves around positive decision-making and following our 5 simple expectations. Students are rewarded for positive behavior through verbal praise and with our penny reward system. Each student begins their day with 5 pennies which represent the 5 First Grade Expectations. Students have the opportunity to keep their 5 (or more) pennies and add them to their bank at the end of the day if the expectations are followed.
If 'below the line' behavior occurs the child will be given a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, the child pays one of their pennies to the teacher’s piggy bank, and the teacher will retrain to correct the expected behavior with this student. If behavior does not improve, retraining will happen again and a consequence will be given (ex: think about it paper, time out of 2nd recess) and also they will pay another penny.
The first grade teachers are committed to fostering independence in the classroom. We also value communication and stay in contact with parents daily through our planners, emails, and phone calls when necessary. We also host conferences in the fall and spring!
