NASA
NASA has a number of co-ops, internships, and research positions. These can be competitive and hard to get, and are sometimes limited to US citizens, but are great and potentially life-changing experiences!
National Geospatial Intelligence Agency
The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and, more broadly, the Department of Defense, have a number of internship oppurtunities. These will mostly be restricted to US citizens.

How to Read a Scientific Paper
This infographic from Elsevier shows the basic steps involved in reading a scientific paper. One important thing is that nearly all papers will have one or a few key points that distinguish it from other work that has been done. Try to identify and understand these key points, and you will have succeeded in understanding the main purpose of the paper! Then delve into details as they are relevant for your own research.
