In recent weeks, we have all taken a giant leap into the digital world. Through technology, children have access to new tools, a wide range of resources and stimulating opportunities to participate in new ways. While media and technology hold great promise for learning, our students need support and education to learn how to make sound judgements when navigating the digital world and the skills that they will need to be successful in school and beyond. Common Sense Media has a fantastic Digital Citizenship education program for children in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Below you will find a series of short videos, discussion questions, and family activities created by Common Sense Media to help your student to become a digital citizen.

Kindergarten

Media Balance Discussion Questions: What was your favorite part of the song? What was one thing you learned from the song? Why should you take a break from your device when a friend says "hi"?

Pause, Breath, Finish Up! Discussion Questions: Do you ever have a hard time pausing when you’re in the middle of watching a show or playing a game? If so, why do you think it’s hard to pause? Why do you think it's important to stop what you're doing and pause for people even if you don't want to?

My Online Neighborhood Discussion Questions: What did Arms like about the internet? What kinds of things can he do online? What three rules does Arms follow when going places online?

1st Grade

Pause and Think Online Discussion Questions: Which character do you relate to most when you go online? Why is it important to be kind online? Why shouldn't you open a message from someone you don't know?

How Does Technology Make You Feel? Discussion Questions: Why is it important to listen to your feelings when using technology? Draw a picture to show what you will do if you get an uncomfortable feeling using technology.

Internet Traffic Light Discussion Questions: When you play outside without a grown-up, what are some of the things that you do to stay safe? Green means an app or website that is just right for you. Can you think of an app that is a green app? How do you know that it is just right and safe?

2nd Grade

We the Digital Citizens Discussion Questions: What was one thing you learned from the Digital Citizens? Why is it a good idea to set a time limit when using technology? Why shouldn't you share your username or password with other people?

Follow the Digital Trail Discussion Questions: What information is NOT okay to share online? What information is okay to share online? What should you do if you are not sure what you should share online?
