Formative: These assessments take place DURING the learning. Formative assessments allow for me to change my instruction based off the needs of the students. Formative assessments can be both formal and informal. Formal assessments allow me to collect data from each student and monitor their learning progress. Informal formative assessments are frequent check-ins that happen during student work time or classroom activities. Both formal and informal assessment allow for me to change my instruction during a lesson to best fit the needs of my students.
Summative: These assessments take place AFTER the beginning of the learning has happened. Usually I give summative assessment at the end of a unit. I use the data from these assessments to guide the content and delivery to either review or for the next unit.
I believe the learning process never ends and certainly does not end just because they have completed an assessment. My students can ALWAYS refine their thinking by relearning, completing practice and working through their areas of confusion.
