The TEX Method
The E.C. Goodwin Strategy for Answering Open-Ended Questions
T = Thesis
1. Turn the question around (TTQA).
2. Answer the question in your own words using because (or a similar preposition.)
Example Question: Why do we use MLA Format in Ms. Perry’s Class?
Example Thesis:
We use MLA Format in Ms. Perry’s class because it is the same format used in other English classes, as well as other disciplines.
E = Evidence
1. If the source was not already introduced in your assignment, introduce the source with the title and year it was first published. Book titles are underlined when you are writing by hand, or in italics when typing. Article titles are in “quotation marks.”
2. Use a word-for-word quotation from the text.
3. Use the appropriate MLA in-text citation (author’s last name and page number.)
Example Evidence:
a) In “MLA Format and You” (2016), James Smith notes, “MLA Format is the standard format used in arts and humanities courses to present information and document sources” (17).
b) “MLA Format and You” (2016) states, “MLA Format is the standard format used in arts and humanities courses to present information and document sources” (Smith 17).
X = eXplanation
1. Begin with a transitional word or phrase, such as therefore, hence, or thus.
2. Explain in your own words how and why the evidence supports your thesis. You may use more than one sentence.
3. Your explanation should extend and evaluate the thesis and evidence, not simply REPEAT them.
Example Explanation:
Therefore, by using MLA Format in Ms. Perry’s class, we are preparing for success in college. Not only are we learning a standard method for writing texts; we are also learning to avoid plagiarism by properly citing other authors.
